Erectile Issues in Young Men: Causes and Solutions - Urology

I am still young?

Doctor: As you can see, I am still very young, only 19 years old, and living a normal life.
However, since around June or July, I have noticed that while I can still achieve an erection and ejaculate, the hardness is not as strong as before.
When I lightly touch the mid to lower part of my penis, I can bend it, and I feel there is a difference in appearance compared to before, both in length and girth.
Additionally, when I wake up in the morning, my penis is often in a flaccid state or only slightly erect, and it feels soft, unlike before when I would wake up with a firm erection.
This issue has been bothering me for a long time, and I often search online for information regarding this.
Could it be due to my lack of exercise? Or is it a problem with insufficient penile blood flow? Or have I become accustomed to certain types of stimulation? (Previously, I had a check-up due to frequent urination, and the doctor mentioned some small stones.
I can't remember where they were located, but the timing of the stones' appearance coincided with the onset of this issue.
However, that doctor said drinking water would help flush them out.
Since then, I have probably consumed less than 10 cans of beverages and have only been drinking water.) Thank you, doctor, for taking the time to read my concerns.

Hello, Xiao Jie.
Your issue is actually a common phenomenon at this age.
Engaging in a particular activity frequently can lead to habituation, resulting in decreased sensitivity and excitement levels.
You might consider changing your approach or taking a longer break from DIY activities.
After some time, this may improve the strength and quality of your erections.
This response is from Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of the Urology Department at Taitung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) in young men is a multifaceted issue that can stem from various causes, including psychological, physiological, and lifestyle factors. Your concerns are valid, especially given your age of 19, and it's important to address them comprehensively.

Understanding the Causes of Erectile Dysfunction
1. Psychological Factors: Anxiety, stress, and performance pressure can significantly impact erectile function. The mind plays a crucial role in sexual arousal, and if you're feeling anxious about your sexual performance or are preoccupied with other stressors, it can lead to difficulties in achieving or maintaining an erection. This is often referred to as psychogenic erectile dysfunction.

2. Physiological Factors: Conditions affecting blood flow, nerve function, or hormone levels can also contribute to ED. For instance, if you have a history of urinary issues or kidney stones, as you mentioned, it could indicate underlying physiological problems that might affect erectile function. Reduced blood flow to the penis can result in weaker erections, which may explain why you feel your penis is less rigid than before.

3. Lifestyle Factors: Your lifestyle choices, including diet, exercise, and substance use, can significantly influence erectile health. A sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits can lead to obesity and cardiovascular issues, which are known risk factors for ED. Regular physical activity improves blood circulation and overall health, which can enhance erectile function.

4. Hormonal Issues: Testosterone levels play a vital role in sexual function. Low testosterone can lead to decreased libido and erectile difficulties. If you suspect hormonal imbalances, it might be worthwhile to have your hormone levels checked.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: Given your ongoing concerns, it would be beneficial to consult a urologist or an endocrinologist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including blood tests to check hormone levels and other assessments to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

2. Psychological Support: If psychological factors are contributing to your ED, consider speaking with a mental health professional. Therapy can help address anxiety and stress, improving your sexual function.

3. Lifestyle Modifications:
- Exercise Regularly: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. Exercise improves blood flow, reduces stress, and can enhance your overall sexual health.

- Healthy Diet: Focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Avoid excessive consumption of sugary drinks and processed foods.

- Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is crucial, especially if you have a history of kidney stones. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

4. Limit Stimulants: If you consume alcohol or recreational drugs, consider reducing or eliminating these substances, as they can negatively impact erectile function.

5. Avoid Excessive Masturbation: Frequent masturbation can sometimes lead to temporary desensitization. If you feel that this might be an issue, consider moderating the frequency and see if your erectile function improves.

6. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, including any changes in libido, erection quality, and overall sexual satisfaction. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing and treating your condition.

Conclusion
Erectile dysfunction at a young age can be distressing, but it's essential to remember that it is often treatable. By addressing both psychological and physiological factors, making lifestyle changes, and seeking professional help, you can improve your sexual health and regain confidence in your sexual function. Remember, open communication with healthcare providers is key to finding the right solutions tailored to your specific situation.
