Menstrual issues?
Hello, doctor! I've been troubled by menstrual issues for a long time! Since I started menstruating as a teenager, my periods have been irregular.
I didn't pay much attention to it, and now at 23, they are still irregular.
Each time, my period either comes very late by many days or is very light and drags on.
Sometimes, it has lasted up to half a month.
I'm quite worried that this issue might lead to infertility.
Why is this happening? I've never been to a gynecologist for a check-up because I'm afraid of the internal examination, so I've been hesitant to go!

I can only recommend that you visit a trusted gynecological clinic for an examination.

Irregular menstrual periods can be a source of concern for many women, especially when it comes to issues of fertility and overall reproductive health. Your experience of having irregular cycles since adolescence is not uncommon, but it is important to understand the potential implications and the reasons behind these irregularities.
Firstly, menstrual irregularities can stem from a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, lifestyle choices, stress, and underlying medical conditions. Conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and other endocrine issues can lead to irregular periods. Stress and significant changes in weight—whether loss or gain—can also disrupt your menstrual cycle. It is crucial to consider these factors when evaluating your situation.
The concern about infertility is valid, as irregular periods can sometimes indicate that ovulation is not occurring regularly. Ovulation is essential for conception, and if you are not ovulating, it may be more challenging to become pregnant. However, having irregular periods does not automatically mean that you will be infertile. Many women with irregular cycles can still conceive, but it may take longer or require medical assistance.
Given that you have not yet consulted a gynecologist, it would be beneficial to do so. While the thought of an internal examination can be daunting, a gynecologist can provide a comprehensive evaluation of your menstrual health without necessarily requiring an internal exam at the first visit. They can discuss your menstrual history, perform necessary blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly conduct an ultrasound to assess your ovaries and uterus. This initial consultation can help identify any underlying issues that may be contributing to your irregular cycles.
Additionally, keeping a menstrual diary can be helpful. Documenting the dates of your periods, their duration, and any accompanying symptoms (such as pain or mood changes) can provide valuable information to your healthcare provider. This information can assist in diagnosing any potential conditions and tailoring a treatment plan that suits your needs.
If it turns out that you have a condition like PCOS or another hormonal imbalance, there are various treatment options available. Lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and a balanced diet, can significantly impact your menstrual regularity. In some cases, hormonal treatments may be recommended to help regulate your cycle and promote ovulation.
In conclusion, while irregular periods can be concerning, they are manageable with the right medical guidance. It is essential to overcome the fear of seeking help and to prioritize your reproductive health. Consulting a gynecologist can provide you with the answers and reassurance you need regarding your menstrual health and fertility. Remember, taking proactive steps now can lead to better health outcomes in the future.
