Penis size and curvature?

Hello doctor, I am now 18 years old.
My penis measures about 4 to 5 centimeters when flaccid and approximately 11 centimeters when erect.
Additionally, it bends significantly to the left when erect.
I usually masturbate with my left hand; could this be related? Is my penis size too small? I kindly ask for your guidance.
Thank you.

Xiao Yan Zi, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/12/22

Dr. Lai Ronghao reply Urology

Hello: Penis length is unrelated to masturbation; there may be a slight reduction in penis size.

Understanding concerns about penis size and curvature is a common issue for many young men, and it’s important to approach this topic with accurate information and reassurance.
Firstly, regarding penis size, studies have shown that the average erect penis size is typically around 12 to 16 centimeters (approximately 4.7 to 6.3 inches). Your reported size of 11 centimeters (about 4.3 inches) when erect is slightly below the average, but it is still within the normal range. It’s crucial to remember that penis size does not determine one’s worth or ability to engage in satisfying sexual relationships. Many factors contribute to sexual satisfaction, including emotional connection, communication, and technique, rather than just size.

As for the curvature of your penis, it is not uncommon for men to have some degree of curvature. A slight bend is usually normal and can occur due to the natural anatomy of the penis. However, if the curvature is significant enough to cause discomfort during erections or interfere with sexual activity, it might be worth discussing with a healthcare provider. In some cases, significant curvature can be associated with a condition known as Peyronie's disease, which involves the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis. This condition can lead to painful erections and may require medical evaluation.

Regarding your concern about whether using your left hand for masturbation could be related to the curvature, it is unlikely that the hand you use would cause a permanent change in the shape of your penis. However, if you consistently apply pressure in one direction during masturbation, it might temporarily affect the curvature during that time. The penis is a flexible organ, and its shape can change based on various factors, including erection state and blood flow.

If you are experiencing any pain, significant changes in curvature, or other concerning symptoms, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They can provide a thorough examination and discuss any potential treatments if necessary.
In summary, while your concerns about size and curvature are valid, it’s essential to recognize that variations in penis size and shape are normal. If you have further questions or if your concerns persist, seeking advice from a urologist or a healthcare provider specializing in sexual health can provide you with personalized guidance and reassurance. Remember, sexual health is an important aspect of overall well-being, and open communication with a healthcare provider can help address any concerns you may have.
