Am I pregnant?
Hello, I would like to ask if my menstrual period started on November 24th.
I had sexual intercourse on December 15th and 16th, but it was all through withdrawal.
I took pregnancy tests on December 25th and 27th, and they were all negative.
Am I pregnant?
Lin's, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/12/27
Dr. Zhong Wenzhen reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello Miss Lin: If the pregnancy test is accurate, the initial assessment suggests that you are not pregnant.
If your period continues to be absent, it is recommended to take a pregnancy test weekly for monitoring.
(It is advisable to consult a gynecologist for further examination.)

Based on your description, it appears that you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy despite having negative pregnancy test results. Let's break down your situation and provide some insights into understanding pregnancy tests and the factors that can influence their results.
First, it’s important to note that pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. This hormone is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, which typically occurs about six days after conception. Therefore, if you take a pregnancy test too early, it may not detect the hCG levels, leading to a false negative result.
In your case, you mentioned that your last menstrual period started on November 24, and you had sexual intercourse on December 15 and 16. If your menstrual cycle is regular and typically lasts around 28-32 days, your next expected period would have been around December 24 to 26. Since you tested for pregnancy between December 25 and 27 and received negative results, it is possible that you tested too early, especially if implantation occurred later than expected.
Additionally, you mentioned that the sexual encounters were through withdrawal (pull-out method). While this method can reduce the risk of pregnancy, it is not foolproof. Pre-ejaculate fluid can contain sperm, and if any sperm were to enter the vagina, there is still a possibility of pregnancy.
Here are some factors to consider regarding your situation:
1. Timing of the Test: If you tested too early, it might be beneficial to wait a few days and test again, preferably with the first morning urine, which is more concentrated and may provide more accurate results.
2. Menstrual Irregularities: If your menstrual cycle is irregular or if you experience stress, illness, or significant changes in weight, these factors can affect ovulation and your menstrual cycle, potentially leading to a delayed period.
3. Follow-Up Testing: If you continue to receive negative results and your period does not arrive, consider consulting with a healthcare provider. They may recommend a blood test, which can detect lower levels of hCG than urine tests and can provide a more definitive answer.
4. Other Symptoms: If you experience any unusual symptoms, such as severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning signs, seek medical attention promptly. These could indicate other conditions that may require evaluation.
5. Understanding False Negatives: It’s essential to understand that false negatives can occur, especially if the test is taken too early or if the test is not performed according to the instructions. Always check the expiration date of the test and ensure that you follow the directions carefully.
In summary, while your negative pregnancy tests suggest that you are not pregnant, it is still possible that you could be, especially if you tested too early. If your period does not arrive soon, or if you have any concerns, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation and guidance. They can provide you with the necessary tests and support to address your concerns effectively.
