Can a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment and turned black be effectively whitened?
Hello, today I visited a nearby dental clinic to consult with the dentists regarding my two severely discolored teeth, which are significantly affecting my appearance.
The dentist mentioned that this is due to having had root canal treatment and recommended that I consider crowns.
They also stated that teeth whitening would not be effective.
However, I would like to ask if procedures like cold light or laser whitening would truly not achieve any whitening effect on teeth that have undergone root canal treatment.
Since I live in a more rural area, we do not have access to laser or cold light equipment.
I noticed that many other patients seem to be advised by dentists to get crowns because they can make non-vital teeth stronger and improve aesthetics, but I am concerned that grinding down the teeth could cause damage.
A good quality crown can be quite expensive, and the color is fixed.
Should I consider whitening my teeth first, and if I am not satisfied with the results, then proceed with getting crowns? This way, I could choose a whiter shade, right?
Also, how long can crowns typically last? Could you provide a rough estimate? Thank you for your response.

Hello: Teeth that turn black after root canal treatment usually cannot be whitened through bleaching methods.
They indeed require a crown for protection, which can achieve aesthetic results and also prevent tooth fracture.
Proper usage and maintenance of the crown are essential to prolong its lifespan.

When it comes to the aesthetic concerns surrounding teeth that have undergone root canal treatment, particularly those that have darkened or become discolored, it's essential to understand the underlying reasons for these changes and the available treatment options.
Teeth that have had root canal therapy often become darker due to the breakdown of blood vessels and nerve tissues within the tooth. This process can lead to the formation of pigments that stain the tooth structure. Unfortunately, conventional whitening treatments, such as in-office bleaching (cold light or laser whitening), are generally ineffective for teeth that have undergone root canal treatment. This is primarily because the discoloration is not superficial but rather intrinsic, meaning it originates from within the tooth itself.
For individuals with discolored teeth post-root canal, the most recommended approach is to consider dental crowns or veneers. Dental crowns are particularly beneficial as they not only improve the appearance of the tooth but also provide structural support, especially if the tooth has become weakened due to the loss of nerve and blood supply. While it's true that placing a crown involves some reduction of the natural tooth structure, this is often necessary to ensure a proper fit and function of the crown.
Regarding your concern about the cost of dental crowns, it's important to note that prices can vary significantly based on the material used (porcelain, metal, or a combination) and the dental practice's location. While the initial investment may seem high, crowns are designed to last many years—often 10 to 15 years or more—if properly cared for. This longevity can make them a worthwhile investment in your dental health and appearance.
If you are considering whitening treatments before getting a crown, it's crucial to understand that the color of the crown will not change once it is made. Therefore, if you choose to whiten your teeth first, you should do so with the understanding that the crown will need to match the new shade of your natural teeth. However, as previously mentioned, whitening treatments may not be effective for the discolored tooth in question.
In summary, while whitening treatments may not provide the desired results for teeth that have undergone root canal therapy, dental crowns or veneers are effective solutions for restoring both function and aesthetics. It's advisable to consult with a qualified dentist who can assess your specific situation, discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of each option, and help you make an informed decision that aligns with your aesthetic goals and budget. Always ensure that you communicate your concerns and preferences clearly with your dentist to achieve the best possible outcome for your dental health and appearance.
