Chest tightness... abdominal discomfort..?
Dear Doctor,
I often feel discomfort in my abdomen after eating certain foods, experiencing a bloated sensation, although it doesn't seem to be gas.
Sometimes, I even feel this way in the morning right after waking up, without having eaten anything.
I frequently burp, and at night while trying to sleep, my stomach makes gurgling sounds.
It feels as if there is gas trapped in my abdomen.
Additionally, I often experience a tightness in my chest and difficulty breathing, sometimes taking deep breaths.
This sensation is especially pronounced after singing or practicing diaphragmatic breathing.
If I lightly tap my chest with my fist, I tend to burp more.
I'm unsure what this condition might be.
Which specialty should I consult for help? Thank you, Doctor.

Dr. Li Huixiong reply Internal Medicine
This is commonly referred to as indigestion.
I recommend the following: 1.
Try not to talk while eating.
2.
Limit your intake of bamboo shoots, glutinous rice products, legumes, and carbonated beverages such as soda and cola.
3.
Avoid overeating; aim for about 70-80% fullness.
If you still feel uncomfortable, it is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist.
If there are no serious issues, taking some medication should lead to improvement fairly quickly.

More Info
It sounds like you're experiencing a combination of gastrointestinal discomfort and respiratory symptoms, which can be quite distressing. Let's break down your symptoms and discuss potential causes, as well as when to seek medical help.
Symptoms Overview
1. Abdominal Discomfort: You mentioned feeling bloated and uncomfortable after eating, as well as experiencing gurgling sounds in your stomach. These symptoms can be indicative of several gastrointestinal issues, such as:
- Gastritis: Inflammation of the stomach lining, which can cause discomfort and bloating.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): A functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits.
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): This condition can cause bloating and discomfort, especially if stomach acid flows back into the esophagus.
- Food Intolerances: Certain foods may not be well-tolerated, leading to bloating and discomfort.
2. Chest Tightness and Breathing Difficulties: The sensation of tightness in your chest and difficulty breathing, especially after singing or practicing deep breathing, could be related to:
- Anxiety or Panic Attacks: These can manifest physically, causing sensations of tightness in the chest and difficulty breathing.
- Muscle Strain: If you are practicing deep breathing or singing, you may inadvertently strain the muscles around your chest.
- Gastroesophageal Reflux: As mentioned earlier, GERD can also cause chest discomfort due to acid irritation.
When to Seek Help
Given the combination of symptoms you're experiencing, it's important to consult a healthcare professional. Here are some guidelines on when to seek help:
- Persistent Symptoms: If your abdominal discomfort and chest tightness persist or worsen, it's crucial to seek medical advice.
- Severe Pain: If you experience severe abdominal pain, especially if it is sudden or accompanied by other symptoms like fever, vomiting, or changes in bowel habits, you should seek immediate medical attention.
- Breathing Difficulties: If you find it increasingly difficult to breathe or if you experience chest pain that radiates to your arm, neck, or jaw, you should seek emergency care, as these could be signs of a more serious condition.
Recommended Specialists
Based on your symptoms, here are some specialists you might consider consulting:
1. Gastroenterologist: This specialist can help evaluate your gastrointestinal symptoms. They may recommend tests such as an endoscopy or imaging studies to assess for conditions like gastritis, GERD, or IBS.
2. Pulmonologist: If your chest tightness and breathing difficulties persist, a pulmonologist can evaluate your respiratory health and rule out any underlying lung conditions.
3. Psychiatrist or Psychologist: If anxiety is a contributing factor to your symptoms, speaking with a mental health professional can be beneficial. They can provide strategies to manage anxiety, which may alleviate some of your physical symptoms.
Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms of abdominal discomfort and chest tightness warrant further investigation. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide a thorough evaluation and appropriate management. Keeping a symptom diary, noting when your symptoms occur and any potential triggers, can also be helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing your condition. Don't hesitate to seek help; your health and well-being are paramount.
