There is a small blackish area next to the urethra on the glans penis that resembles a bruise?
Hello, I have a small dark spot next to the slit of my glans that looks like a bruise, and it has been there for over a year.
It doesn't hurt, it isn't hard, and it doesn't protrude; it's just a small dark area.
I would like to know if this could be due to not wearing underwear.
I clean my glans every day, but I don't understand why this is happening.
Please help me with an answer! Thank you.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Hello, I think there are a few possibilities: 1.
Congenital pigment deposition 2.
Vascular pigmentation 3.
Lesions of the glans mucosa.
Although I haven't seen it, I believe it shouldn't be a major concern.
If you're worried, you can seek medical attention nearby.

More Info
When it comes to dark spots near the urethra, particularly on the glans (the head of the penis), there are several potential causes to consider. It's important to note that while I can provide general information, a proper diagnosis should always be made by a healthcare professional through a physical examination and possibly additional tests.
1. Hyperpigmentation: One of the most common reasons for a dark spot on the skin, including the genital area, is hyperpigmentation. This can occur due to various factors such as friction, irritation, or even hormonal changes. If you have been engaging in activities that cause friction in that area, it could lead to localized darkening of the skin.
2. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: If there was any previous irritation or inflammation in that area, even if it was minor and you did not notice it, it could lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This is a common response of the skin to injury or inflammation, resulting in a darker area where the skin has healed.
3. Dermatological Conditions: Certain skin conditions, such as lichen planus or seborrheic keratosis, can also present as dark spots. These conditions may not cause pain or discomfort but can appear as changes in skin color or texture.
4. Vascular Issues: Sometimes, dark spots can be related to vascular issues, such as small blood vessels that have become more prominent or even small bruises that have not fully resolved.
5. Moles or Nevi: It is also possible that what you are observing is a benign mole or nevus. These can vary in color and size and are usually harmless. However, any changes in size, shape, or color should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
6. Infections or STIs: While you mentioned that there is no pain or discomfort, it is still important to consider that some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can present with changes in skin color or lesions. Regular check-ups and screenings are essential for sexually active individuals.
7. Hygiene Practices: You mentioned that you do not wear underwear and that you clean the area daily. While good hygiene is crucial, not wearing underwear can sometimes lead to increased friction or irritation, especially if you are engaging in activities that cause movement or rubbing in that area.
Given that this dark spot has been present for over a year without any changes in symptoms, it is likely benign. However, it is crucial to monitor it for any changes. If the spot changes in size, color, or if you develop any new symptoms (such as pain, itching, or discharge), you should seek medical attention promptly.
In conclusion, while the dark spot you describe may not be a cause for immediate concern, it is always best to consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They can provide a definitive diagnosis and recommend any necessary treatment or monitoring. Regular check-ups are essential for maintaining sexual health and addressing any concerns that may arise.
