Total blindness in one eye and severe myopia in the other eye?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask you a question.
My mother is 54 years old this year.
She became completely blind in one eye due to an accident in her twenties, and the other eye has severe myopia (over 1000 degrees).
My mother is not accustomed to wearing glasses, so I have noticed that she only sees things with very limited vision.
I am very worried that her eyesight will gradually deteriorate, leading to complete blindness in both eyes! Recently, there was a news report about a medical discovery that acupuncture can stimulate the optic nerve to restore vision.
Is there really hope for my mother's vision to improve, even just a little? Thank you!
Fangfang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/01/30
Dr. Liu Jingxian reply Ophthalmology
Hello, Miss: Your mother's poor vision may be due to optic nerve atrophy or other causes.
We welcome you to visit the Ophthalmology Department at the City United Hospital for further diagnosis.
Regarding "optic nerve atrophy," generally speaking, damaged nerves do not regenerate.
Whether acupuncture can achieve "nerve regeneration" still requires large-scale clinical results for a definitive conclusion.
Other areas of clinical research, such as "stem cell" studies, also hold promise for the future.
Wishing you good health.
Dr.

Acupuncture has been a subject of interest in the realm of alternative medicine, particularly for its potential benefits in various health conditions, including eye health. However, when it comes to restoring vision in a blind eye or significantly improving severe myopia, the evidence supporting acupuncture's effectiveness is limited and largely anecdotal.
In your mother's case, where she has been blind in one eye due to an accident and has severe myopia in the other eye, it is essential to understand the underlying mechanisms of her conditions. Blindness in one eye, especially due to trauma, often involves damage to the optic nerve or other critical structures in the eye. Unfortunately, once these structures are severely damaged, the chances of restoring vision through any means, including acupuncture, are quite slim. The optic nerve does not regenerate well, and while some studies suggest that acupuncture may help with certain types of visual disturbances or conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye), it is unlikely to restore vision in a completely blind eye.
For severe myopia, which is characterized by a high degree of nearsightedness, the primary treatment options typically include corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses) or surgical interventions such as LASIK or other refractive surgeries. Acupuncture has not been proven to alter the refractive state of the eye or significantly improve myopia. While some practitioners may claim that acupuncture can help with eye strain or fatigue, these effects are generally temporary and do not address the underlying refractive error.
It is also important to consider the psychological aspect of your mother's vision issues. If she is not comfortable wearing glasses, it may be beneficial to explore options that could help her adapt to wearing them, such as contact lenses or even discussing the possibility of refractive surgery with an eye care professional. Additionally, regular eye examinations are crucial to monitor her eye health and detect any changes that may require intervention.
In terms of acupuncture, while it may provide some relaxation and stress relief, which can be beneficial for overall well-being, it should not be seen as a primary treatment for restoring vision. If your mother is interested in acupuncture, it would be wise to consult with a qualified practitioner who has experience in treating eye conditions and can provide a realistic understanding of what acupuncture can and cannot achieve.
In conclusion, while acupuncture may have some benefits for eye health and overall wellness, it is unlikely to restore vision in a blind eye or significantly improve severe myopia. It is essential to focus on evidence-based treatments and regular eye care to manage her conditions effectively. Encouraging your mother to maintain regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist and exploring appropriate corrective options will be the best course of action to help preserve her remaining vision and improve her quality of life.
