Ovulation issues
Hello doctor, I would like to ask if women with a normal menstrual cycle experience a clear, egg white-like discharge during ovulation.
Does this discharge occur after ovulation has already taken place? Is the egg white-like discharge the egg itself? Does this also indicate that fertilization has not been successful?
Xinxin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/02/07
Dr. Huang Jianxun reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello: The presence of egg white-like mucus indicates that you are near your ovulation period.
For precise ovulation timing, you can track your basal body temperature or purchase ovulation testing kits.
Sincerely, Dr.
Huang Chien-Hsun, Obstetrics and Gynecology.

During the menstrual cycle, women experience various changes in cervical mucus, which can provide significant insights into ovulation and fertility. The egg white-like discharge you are referring to is a common sign of ovulation. This type of cervical mucus is typically clear, stretchy, and resembles raw egg whites. It is produced in response to rising estrogen levels just before ovulation and serves several purposes, including facilitating sperm movement through the cervix and into the uterus, thereby increasing the chances of fertilization.
To clarify, the egg white discharge does not represent the egg itself; rather, it is a secretion from the cervix that indicates the body is preparing for ovulation. Ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released from the ovary, which usually happens about 12 to 16 days before the start of the next menstrual period in a typical 28-day cycle. The presence of egg white cervical mucus suggests that ovulation is imminent, not that it has already occurred. Therefore, if you notice this type of discharge, it is a signal that you are in your fertile window, and it is an ideal time for intercourse if you are trying to conceive.
Regarding your question about whether the presence of this discharge means that conception has not occurred, it is essential to understand that the egg white mucus itself does not indicate the success or failure of fertilization. After ovulation, if the egg is not fertilized by sperm within approximately 12 to 24 hours, it will disintegrate and be absorbed by the body. If fertilization does occur, the fertilized egg (now called a zygote) will travel down the fallopian tube and implant itself in the uterine lining, which can lead to pregnancy.
If you are actively trying to conceive and have been tracking your ovulation signs, it is important to have intercourse during the days leading up to and including the day of ovulation. This is because sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so having intercourse during this fertile window increases the likelihood of sperm being present when the egg is released.
In summary, the egg white discharge is a sign that you are approaching ovulation, and it is not an indication of whether fertilization has occurred. If you are not achieving pregnancy despite timing intercourse around ovulation, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider. They can assess both partners for potential fertility issues and provide guidance on optimizing your chances of conception. Factors such as the health of the sperm, the timing of intercourse, and the overall reproductive health of both partners can all play a role in achieving pregnancy.
