Nasal allergies
Hello: My husband has been experiencing nasal allergies for a long time...
He has dark circles under his eyes, and previously when he had a cold, he visited an ENT doctor who diagnosed him with sinusitis.
Although the cold has resolved, he often coughs due to phlegm; he feels better after coughing it up, but he needs to cough occasionally.
Most of the phlegm is white and frothy, while yellow phlegm is less common.
Recently, someone told me that consuming southern ginger can help with allergies and provided a recipe: one pound of southern ginger, five red dates, five pieces of yellow qi, and five pieces of licorice, boiled in ten bowls of water until three bowls remain, to be taken before meals.
Is this recipe safe? Will it really be effective? Can we try it? Are there any contraindications for using this recipe, or any symptoms that would indicate it should not be used?

Dr. He Zongrong reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Dear Mrs.
Zhang,
Based on the symptoms you described, your husband likely has allergic rhinitis and sinusitis, presenting with clear nasal discharge and thin phlegm, which may indicate a wind-cold syndrome.
However, it is unclear whether there is an underlying deficiency syndrome without further information.
Your prescription is generally acceptable, but whether it may lead to excessive heat or fire after administration would require further differentiation to determine.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Sincerely,
Dr.

More Info
Managing allergic rhinitis can be a complex process, especially when considering various treatment options, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) remedies. Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is characterized by symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and itchy eyes. It can be triggered by allergens like pollen, dust mites, mold, and pet dander. In your case, the presence of dark circles and persistent cough with phlegm suggests that your husband may be experiencing chronic allergic rhinitis, possibly complicated by sinusitis.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Approach
In TCM, allergic rhinitis is often viewed through the lens of imbalances in the body's energy (Qi), and treatments aim to restore harmony. The use of herbs is common, and remedies may include ingredients that are believed to strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and clear phlegm.

The Recipe You Mentioned
The recipe you mentioned includes:
- 南姜 (Nanjing Ginger): Known for its warming properties, it is often used to dispel cold and dampness from the body. It may help alleviate symptoms associated with respiratory issues.
- 紅棗 (Red Dates): These are used to nourish the blood and improve overall vitality. They are also thought to have a calming effect.
- 黃棋 (Huangqi or Astragalus): This herb is known for its immune-boosting properties and is often used to strengthen the body's defenses against allergies and infections.
- 甘草 (Licorice Root): This herb is used for its soothing properties and can help harmonize the other ingredients in the formula.
The preparation method you described—boiling the ingredients in water—aligns with traditional practices in TCM, where decoctions are a common way to extract the beneficial properties of herbs.
Efficacy and Considerations
While many people find relief from symptoms using TCM remedies, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of specific herbal treatments can be limited. The effectiveness of the recipe may vary from person to person, and while some individuals may experience improvement, others may not notice significant changes.

Potential Side Effects and Contraindications
1. Allergic Reactions: Although these herbs are generally considered safe, there is always a risk of allergic reactions. Monitor for any unusual symptoms after starting the remedy.
2. Interactions with Medications: If your husband is taking other medications, it's essential to consult with a healthcare provider to avoid potential interactions.
3. Underlying Conditions: If your husband has any underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension, certain herbs may not be advisable. For example, licorice can affect blood pressure and potassium levels.
4. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: If applicable, some herbs may not be safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Recommendations
1. Consult a TCM Practitioner: Before starting any new herbal regimen, it’s advisable to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner who can provide personalized advice based on your husband’s specific health condition.
2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in symptoms after starting the remedy. If symptoms worsen or new symptoms arise, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.
3. Integrate with Conventional Treatments: If your husband is already under treatment for allergic rhinitis or sinusitis, discuss with his healthcare provider about integrating TCM remedies with conventional treatments.
Conclusion
While the TCM remedy you mentioned may offer some benefits for managing allergic rhinitis, it is essential to approach it with caution and under professional guidance. Allergic rhinitis can significantly impact quality of life, and finding the right balance between traditional and modern medicine can lead to better management of symptoms. Always prioritize safety and efficacy when considering new treatments.
