Mole removal

I would like to remove a mole, but the mole on my face is about 0.7 cm and protrudes about 3 to 4 mm.
If I decide to remove it, how many sessions will it take? Also, if it requires two or three sessions, how long should I wait between each session? I'm not sure if laser treatment is suitable or if it needs to be excised.

Dr. Jiang Yujiao reply Dermatology

Hello: In response to your question, a 3-4mm raised lesion can be treated with laser therapy.
If it is not completely removed in one session, it is recommended to wait 1-2 months before attempting another treatment.

When considering the removal of moles, particularly those that are raised and measure around 0.7 cm, it is essential to weigh the options between laser removal and surgical excision. Each method has its own advantages, disadvantages, and recommended treatment frequencies.

Laser Removal vs. Surgical Excision
1. Laser Removal: This method utilizes focused light beams to target and break down the pigment in the mole. It is generally less invasive than surgical excision and can be performed in an outpatient setting. The benefits of laser removal include minimal scarring, a quicker recovery time, and the ability to treat multiple moles in one session. However, it is important to note that not all moles are suitable for laser treatment. Flat moles or those that are not deeply rooted in the skin respond better to laser therapy. Raised moles, especially those that are larger or have irregular borders, may not be effectively treated with laser alone.

2. Surgical Excision: This method involves cutting out the mole along with a margin of surrounding skin. It is often recommended for moles that are suspected to be atypical or potentially cancerous, as it allows for a thorough examination of the tissue. Surgical excision typically results in a more definitive removal of the mole, and it is the preferred method for larger or raised moles. The downside is that it may leave a more noticeable scar compared to laser removal, and the recovery time may be longer.

Treatment Frequency and Timing
If you decide to go with laser removal, the number of sessions required can vary based on the mole's size, depth, and response to treatment. For a mole that is approximately 0.7 cm and raised, it may take 2 to 3 sessions to achieve satisfactory results. The intervals between sessions can typically range from 4 to 6 weeks, allowing the skin to heal and the body to respond to the treatment before undergoing another session.

For surgical excision, usually, only one session is needed to remove the mole completely. However, if the mole is sent for pathological examination and further treatment is required, additional follow-ups may be necessary.

Safety Considerations
Regardless of the method chosen, safety is paramount. Here are some key points to consider:
- Consultation: Always consult with a qualified dermatologist or a plastic surgeon before proceeding with mole removal. They can assess the mole's characteristics and recommend the most appropriate treatment method.

- Skin Type and Healing: Individual skin types and healing responses can affect the outcome of both laser and surgical procedures. Discuss any concerns about scarring or skin sensitivity with your healthcare provider.

- Post-Procedure Care: Follow the aftercare instructions provided by your healthcare provider to minimize the risk of infection and promote healing. This may include keeping the area clean, avoiding sun exposure, and using prescribed ointments.

In conclusion, the choice between laser removal and surgical excision for mole removal depends on various factors, including the mole's characteristics, your skin type, and personal preferences regarding scarring and recovery time. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with tailored advice and ensure that you make an informed decision.
