Menstrual irregularities after discontinuing birth control pills?
Hello Doctor: I have been taking birth control pills for about 2 years.
After my period started on February 12, I stopped taking the pills.
I had sexual intercourse on February 28, and based on my previous cycles, which were about 25-28 days, my menstrual cycle has not yet arrived.
I have also taken a home pregnancy test, which did not indicate pregnancy.
Could this be due to the prolonged use of the pills causing irregularities in my menstrual cycle after stopping? I have also been experiencing persistent lower abdominal bloating and pain.
Could this be a sign that my period is about to start, or is it related to stopping the medication? Is it safe to take menstrual induction medication on my own? Can Dydrogesterone be used as a menstrual induction medication? How should it be taken?
Jun, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/03/13

Hello: If your menstruation is delayed, please promptly visit the obstetrics and gynecology department for a pregnancy test.
If you are not pregnant, you should consult a physician to investigate the cause.
Please do not self-medicate.

Understanding menstrual irregularities after stopping birth control pills is a common concern for many women. When you stop taking hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, your body may take some time to readjust to its natural hormonal cycle. This adjustment period can lead to irregularities in your menstrual cycle, including delayed periods, changes in flow, and even symptoms like abdominal bloating or discomfort.
In your case, having taken birth control pills for about two years means that your body has been accustomed to the synthetic hormones provided by the pills. When you stop taking them, it can take some time for your body to resume its natural hormonal balance. The average time for a woman’s menstrual cycle to return to normal after stopping birth control can vary widely, ranging from a few weeks to several months. Some women may experience a return to regular cycles quickly, while others may have irregular cycles for a longer period.
The absence of your period since stopping the pill, especially if your previous cycles were regular, can be attributed to the hormonal changes your body is undergoing. It is also important to note that stress, changes in weight, and other health factors can contribute to menstrual irregularities. The bloating and discomfort you are experiencing in your lower abdomen could be related to the hormonal fluctuations as your body adjusts, or it could be a sign that your period is approaching.
Regarding your question about taking medication to induce menstruation, it is generally not advisable to self-medicate without consulting a healthcare provider. While some medications can help regulate menstrual cycles, they should only be taken under medical supervision. For example, medications like Provera (medroxyprogesterone) can be prescribed to induce a period, but they are not the same as birth control pills and should not be used interchangeably.
As for your question about using Diane-35 (commonly known as "Diane") as a means to induce menstruation, it is primarily a contraceptive pill and not intended for that purpose. Using it without a doctor's guidance could lead to further hormonal imbalances and complications. If you are considering using any medication to regulate your cycle, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider first. They can evaluate your specific situation, rule out any underlying conditions, and provide appropriate recommendations.
In summary, it is quite normal to experience menstrual irregularities after stopping birth control pills, and your symptoms may be part of the adjustment process. If your period does not return within a few months, or if you have concerns about your symptoms, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can offer guidance tailored to your health history and current situation, ensuring that you receive the best care possible.
