Redness and swelling after circumcision?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about my condition.
After my laser circumcision last week, on the third day, I noticed redness and swelling at the edge behind the glans.
Now on the seventh day, while the redness and swelling have somewhat decreased, it still hurts a bit when touched.
Today, I visited a urologist who told me that I could use a sitz bath to relieve the redness and swelling.
Is that really possible? He also mentioned that I could start taking sitz baths two days after the surgery.
Isn't it generally advised to wait nearly a week before bathing? I'm concerned because my stitches haven't dissolved yet.
Is it safe to take a sitz bath? Will soaking in warm water really help reduce the swelling? Is there a risk of bacterial infection or increased inflammation? How long does it usually take for the stitches to completely dissolve? Thank you!

Dr. Lai Ronghao reply Urology
Hello: Our practice allows patients to take a shower two days after surgery and to change the dressing.
We recommend soaking in a bath approximately two to three weeks after the stitches have not yet dissolved, to facilitate their early removal.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to visit the outpatient clinic for a more thorough examination.
Thank you!

Post-circumcision care is crucial for ensuring a smooth recovery and minimizing complications such as swelling, pain, and infection. After undergoing a circumcision, especially with laser techniques, it is common to experience some degree of swelling and discomfort in the days following the procedure.
In your case, it is not unusual for the area around the glans (the head of the penis) to appear red and swollen, especially around the sutures. Typically, some pain and tenderness can persist for up to a week or more, depending on individual healing processes. The fact that you are noticing a reduction in swelling by the seventh day is a positive sign, but it is essential to continue monitoring the area for any changes.
Regarding your question about bathing, it is generally advised to avoid submerging the surgical site in water (such as in a bathtub) until the sutures have dissolved or been removed, which usually occurs within 1 to 2 weeks post-surgery. This precaution helps prevent the risk of infection, as soaking in water can introduce bacteria to the healing area. However, your urologist's recommendation to use a bath to alleviate swelling may be based on their assessment of your specific situation. If they have advised you to soak, it is likely they believe the benefits outweigh the risks, but you should ensure that the water is clean and not too hot, as excessive heat can exacerbate swelling.
If you choose to follow your doctor's advice and soak, be cautious. Limit the soaking time and ensure that you are not exposing the area to any potential irritants or contaminants. After bathing, gently pat the area dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing it, which could cause irritation.
As for the stitches, if you have absorbable sutures, they typically dissolve within 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the material used. If you have non-absorbable sutures, they will need to be removed by a healthcare professional, usually within 7 to 14 days after the procedure. It's essential to follow up with your surgeon or urologist for a post-operative check-up to ensure that the healing process is on track and to address any concerns you may have.
In summary, while some swelling and discomfort are normal after circumcision, it is crucial to follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding bathing and wound care. If you notice any signs of increased redness, discharge, or worsening pain, it is essential to contact your doctor immediately, as these could be signs of infection. Always prioritize your health and safety by adhering to the guidance provided by your medical team.
