Will Nose Surgery Affect My Recovery? Common Concerns Explained - Plastic Surgery

Will having undergone rhinoplasty affect anything?

I had a rhinoplasty over a year ago, using an artificial nasal implant.
I took good care of it for the first six months, but now I'm concerned about certain situations that might affect the results, such as: 1.
Rubbing my eyes unconsciously while sleeping at night.
2.
Picking my nose.
3.
Directly rinsing my face with a handheld showerhead while bathing.
4.
Exposing my face to high temperatures while cooking or burning materials (for example, burning wood, burning joss paper, or grilling).
Especially regarding the fourth point, I once stood too close while burning something, and the high temperature made my face feel very hot.
After that, I felt like my nose was different from before, and I'm not sure if it's just a psychological effect!

Dr. Lu Daokuan reply Plastic Surgery

It should be a psychological effect; as long as the body does not produce rejection, causing the artificial nasal bone to become increasingly prominent, it should be suitable for long-term use.

Nose surgery, particularly rhinoplasty, is a procedure that can significantly alter the appearance and function of the nose. After undergoing such surgery, it is crucial to be aware of certain behaviors and environmental factors that could potentially affect your recovery and the long-term results of the procedure. Here are some common concerns and explanations regarding your specific questions:
1. Unconscious Rubbing of the Eyes at Night: Rubbing your eyes can inadvertently put pressure on your nose, especially if you are still in the healing phase. This can lead to displacement of the nasal structure or irritation of the surgical site. It is advisable to be mindful of this habit and consider using a sleep mask or positioning your hands away from your face while sleeping to minimize the risk of accidental rubbing.

2. Nose Picking: This is another behavior that can be detrimental to your recovery. Picking your nose can introduce bacteria into the nasal passages, increasing the risk of infection. Additionally, it can disrupt the healing tissue and potentially lead to scarring or deformity. It is best to avoid this habit entirely, especially in the early stages of recovery.

3. Direct Water Pressure on the Face While Showering: Using a showerhead to directly spray water on your face can be harmful, particularly in the initial weeks following surgery. The force of the water can irritate the healing tissues and may even cause swelling or bleeding. It is recommended to gently wash your face with a soft cloth and avoid direct water pressure on your nose until you receive clearance from your surgeon.

4. Exposure to High Temperatures: Activities that involve high temperatures, such as cooking over an open flame or standing too close to hot surfaces, can cause swelling and discomfort in the nasal area. The heat can also affect the healing process and may lead to changes in the shape of your nose if the tissues are still malleable. It is advisable to maintain a safe distance from high-heat sources and to protect your face from excessive heat exposure.

In addition to these specific concerns, it is essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions closely. This may include avoiding strenuous activities, refraining from wearing glasses for a certain period, and attending follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress.
Moreover, psychological factors can also play a role in your perception of your recovery. If you feel that your nose looks different after exposure to heat, it may be a combination of natural healing processes and psychological effects. It is not uncommon for patients to experience anxiety about their surgical results, especially in the first year post-operation as the final results continue to settle.

In summary, while nose surgery can lead to excellent aesthetic outcomes, it is vital to be cautious and avoid behaviors that could jeopardize your recovery. If you have any concerns about your healing process or the appearance of your nose, do not hesitate to reach out to your surgeon for advice and reassurance. Regular follow-ups will help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly, allowing you to enjoy the results of your surgery fully.
