Black Doll Laser
Hello, doctor.
I have an oily yet dry skin type with mild seborrhea, and the pores and blackheads on my cheeks are quite noticeable.
I don't break out much.
I've been alternating the use of acne treatment products, including 15% AHA for 4-5 years, but the results were only significant at the beginning, and now there's hardly any effect.
Currently, I've been using a daily renewal product for about a month.
Given my stubborn blackheads, oily skin, and enlarged pores, would carbon laser treatment or the newer gentle laser treatments be suitable for me? Would they provide better improvement?

Dr. Huang Ruiyun reply Dermatology
Pore size is similar to height, weight, and skin color; it is somewhat predetermined.
The changes you can make are limited.
If economic factors are not a concern, I recommend trying carbon laser or gentle laser treatments, as personal experiences may differ from those of others.

More Info
When it comes to treating oily skin and persistent blackheads, laser treatments can be an effective option, especially for individuals like yourself who have a combination of oily skin, enlarged pores, and stubborn blackheads. Based on your description, it seems that traditional topical treatments, such as the 15% AHA you've been using, have lost their effectiveness over time. This is not uncommon, as the skin can become accustomed to certain treatments, leading to diminished results.
Types of Laser Treatments
1. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Laser: This type of laser is effective for resurfacing the skin and can help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores and blackheads. It works by removing the outer layers of skin, promoting new skin growth, and stimulating collagen production. However, this treatment may require some downtime for recovery.
2. Erbium Laser: Similar to CO2 lasers, erbium lasers are used for skin resurfacing but tend to have a shorter recovery time and are less aggressive. They can help improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of pores.
3. Fractional Laser: This treatment targets only a fraction of the skin at a time, which allows for quicker healing and less downtime. It can be effective for improving skin texture and reducing the appearance of blackheads and enlarged pores.
4. Pulsed Dye Laser: This type of laser can help with redness and inflammation associated with acne, making it a good option for those with oily skin prone to breakouts.
5. Laser Genesis: This non-invasive treatment uses a laser to promote collagen production and improve skin texture. It can help with enlarged pores and may reduce oiliness over time.
Considerations for Laser Treatments
- Skin Type: It's essential to consider your skin type and any underlying conditions, such as sensitivity or a history of hyperpigmentation. Consulting with a dermatologist who specializes in laser treatments can help determine the best option for your skin.
- Combination Treatments: Sometimes, combining laser treatments with other modalities, such as chemical peels or microneedling, can yield better results. These treatments can enhance the effects of laser therapy by further exfoliating the skin and promoting collagen production.
- Maintenance: After undergoing laser treatments, it's crucial to maintain a proper skincare routine. This may include using non-comedogenic products, regular exfoliation, and possibly continuing with topical treatments that can help manage oiliness and prevent blackheads.
- Sun Protection: Post-laser treatment, your skin will be more sensitive to the sun. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen is vital to protect your skin and prevent complications.
Conclusion
In summary, laser treatments can be highly effective for managing oily skin and persistent blackheads, especially when traditional topical treatments have failed. Options like fractional lasers, CO2 lasers, and laser genesis can provide significant improvements in skin texture and pore appearance. However, it is crucial to consult with a qualified dermatologist to assess your specific skin condition and determine the most appropriate treatment plan tailored to your needs. They can also guide you on post-treatment care and maintenance to ensure long-lasting results.
