Can stronger medications harm the body?
Hello Doctor: I have been experiencing urinary issues (prolonged urge to urinate, weak urine flow, frequent urination, and nocturia).
I have been taking Buwecon Tab 0.125mg and Cyclin Cap 100mg for almost two months, but the improvement has been limited.
The doctor has now switched me to Detrusitol Tab 2mg and Cinolone Tab 250mg.
I would like to know if taking these antibiotics could harm my kidneys or other internal organs.
However, not taking them does not seem to help my condition.
How long should antibiotics ideally be taken? Could you provide some information regarding antibiotics?

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Pong Pong: Hello, antibiotics are generally used as the main treatment when there is a suspicion of a urinary tract infection (UTI).
To determine whether there is an infection, you can conduct urine tests and cultures.
If there is no infection, the use of antibiotics is unnecessary.
Regarding the use of antibiotics for urinary tract infections, it depends on the nature of the infection.
Sometimes, treatment may only require 1 to 3 days; other times, it can last up to 12 weeks.
In certain cases of infections caused by specific strains of tuberculosis bacteria, a special antibiotic treatment may be needed for a year and a half.
To check the side effects of these medications, you can visit the National Health Insurance Administration website.
On the left side, there is a quick search section where you can find the medication inquiry option.
Enter the name of your medication, and you should be able to find relevant information regarding usage guidelines and side effects.

When it comes to managing urological issues, particularly those involving urinary tract infections (UTIs) or bladder inflammation, the use of antibiotics is often a common practice. However, the question of whether stronger medications can be harmful is a valid concern, especially for patients with pre-existing conditions or those who have been on long-term medication regimens.
Antibiotics, such as the ones you mentioned (Buwecon, Cyclin, Detrusitol, and Cinolone), are designed to combat bacterial infections and alleviate symptoms associated with urinary issues. However, they are not without potential side effects and risks, particularly when used over extended periods.
Understanding Antibiotics and Their Risks
1. Antibiotic Resistance: One of the most significant concerns with the prolonged use of antibiotics is the development of antibiotic resistance. This occurs when bacteria evolve and become resistant to the effects of medications that once effectively treated them. This can lead to more severe infections that are harder to treat, requiring stronger or more toxic medications.
2. Impact on Kidney Function: Some antibiotics can have nephrotoxic effects, meaning they can potentially harm the kidneys. This is particularly concerning for individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions or those taking multiple medications that may also affect kidney function. Regular monitoring of kidney function through blood tests may be necessary if you are on long-term antibiotic therapy.
3. Side Effects: Common side effects of antibiotics include gastrointestinal disturbances (such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting), allergic reactions (ranging from mild rashes to severe anaphylaxis), and alterations in gut flora, which can lead to secondary infections like Clostridium difficile colitis.
4. Duration of Use: The duration for which antibiotics should be taken can vary based on the specific infection and the antibiotic used. Generally, for uncomplicated UTIs, a course of antibiotics may last from 3 to 7 days. However, in cases of recurrent infections or chronic conditions, longer courses may be necessary, but this should be closely monitored by a healthcare provider.
Recommendations for Your Situation
Given your history of urinary issues and the medications you are currently taking, here are some recommendations:
- Consult Your Doctor: It is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about your concerns regarding the medications. Discuss any side effects you may be experiencing and ask about the necessity and duration of your antibiotic treatment.
- Consider Alternatives: If antibiotics are not providing the desired relief, your doctor may consider alternative treatments or adjunct therapies. This could include lifestyle changes, dietary modifications, or other medications that target your specific symptoms without the risks associated with long-term antibiotic use.
- Regular Monitoring: If you are on antibiotics for an extended period, regular follow-ups and lab tests to monitor kidney function and overall health are essential. This will help catch any potential issues early and adjust your treatment plan as needed.
- Educate Yourself: Understanding the medications you are taking, their potential side effects, and the importance of completing prescribed courses can empower you to make informed decisions about your health.
In conclusion, while antibiotics can be effective in treating urological issues, their use must be carefully managed to avoid potential harm. Always consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication regimen, and ensure that you are receiving the most appropriate treatment for your condition.
