Why Does My Belly Gurgle While Sleeping on My Right Side During Pregnancy? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

During the eighth month of pregnancy, it is common for the abdomen to make gurgling sounds?

Hello, Doctor: I am currently over 8 months pregnant, but a few days ago I noticed that when I sleep on my right side, I hear a gurgling sound about 2-3 centimeters below my breast.
I initially thought it was just my stomach growling due to hunger, but I realized that even after eating, the sound persists, and it only occurs when I sleep on my right side.
It sounds similar to a hungry stomach or intestinal movement.
Could this indicate a problem with the umbilical cord? I'm a bit worried.
Thank you for your help, Doctor!

Hello Ms.
Ching: 1.
The umbilical cord may produce sounds similar to a pulse, but you cannot hear them.
2.
In the late stages of pregnancy, the intestines are pushed to the periphery of the uterus, including about 2-3 centimeters below the chest, so what you are hearing is likely the sounds of intestinal peristalsis from that area.
Wishing you a smooth delivery.

During pregnancy, especially in the later stages, many women experience various bodily sensations that can be puzzling or concerning. One common phenomenon is the gurgling or rumbling sounds from the abdomen, particularly when lying on one side, such as the right side. This can be attributed to several factors related to the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy.

Firstly, as the pregnancy progresses, the growing uterus expands and exerts pressure on surrounding organs, including the intestines. By the eighth month of pregnancy, the uterus is significantly enlarged and can push the intestines towards the sides of the abdomen. When you lie on your right side, the position may compress certain parts of your intestines, leading to increased peristaltic movements (the contractions of the intestinal muscles that move contents through the digestive tract). This can result in audible sounds, often described as gurgling or rumbling, which is a normal part of digestive activity.
It's important to note that these sounds are not indicative of hunger or a problem with the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord itself does not produce sounds that can be heard externally; rather, it functions to supply nutrients and oxygen to the fetus while removing waste products. The sounds you are hearing are more likely related to the normal functioning of your gastrointestinal system, which may be more pronounced due to the positional changes and pressure from the uterus.

Additionally, during pregnancy, hormonal changes can also affect digestion. The hormone progesterone, which increases during pregnancy, can slow down the digestive process, leading to gas and bloating. This can contribute to the sounds you hear, especially if you have recently eaten or if your digestive system is working to process food.

If you are experiencing discomfort or if the sounds are accompanied by pain, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider. They can assess whether there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed. However, if the gurgling sounds are not associated with any discomfort or other concerning symptoms, they are generally considered a normal occurrence during pregnancy.

In summary, the gurgling sounds you hear while sleeping on your right side during pregnancy are likely due to the normal activity of your intestines being influenced by the position of your body and the pressure from the growing uterus. As long as you are not experiencing pain or other troubling symptoms, this is typically nothing to worry about. Always feel free to reach out to your healthcare provider with any concerns, as they can provide reassurance and guidance tailored to your specific situation.
