How long??

Hello Dr.
Lin, thank you for your previous response.
I would like to ask how long it takes for the ring of tissue behind the glans to diminish after circumcision? It looks fine on the top, but on the bottom, there is a feeling of sagging with a lump of tissue present, and when I have an erection, there is also a lump of tissue.
Is this normal? Additionally, I have been applying a topical anesthetic cream; will long-term use cause any harm to the glans? How long after application is it appropriate to engage in sexual intercourse? Thank you.

Dr. Lin Hexing reply Urology

Hello: In response to your question and to provide some advice, generally, the swelling in the area behind the glans (which is actually the swollen foreskin) will subside within one to two months after circumcision.
However, some individuals may have a slower resolution of swelling due to their unique body constitution.
To promote the reduction of swelling, it is recommended to soak in a bath for 15 minutes every evening.
Typically, the swelling at the base of the foreskin may take longer to resolve, which is normal due to the effects of gravity.
For the first month after surgery, please avoid using local anesthetics and engaging in sexual activity to prevent the risk of wound dehiscence and to facilitate the healing process.
If you do apply a local anesthetic, it should be left on for at least 10 minutes to half an hour for better efficacy in the future!

Circumcision is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the foreskin from the penis. The healing and recovery time after circumcision can vary based on several factors, including the individual's overall health, the surgical technique used, and adherence to post-operative care instructions. Generally, the initial healing period for circumcision typically takes about 1 to 2 weeks. During this time, the surgical site will gradually heal, and any swelling or discomfort should start to subside.

Regarding the specific concerns you mentioned about the "ring of skin" behind the glans (the head of the penis), it is not uncommon for some swelling or residual skin to be present after the procedure. This can be particularly noticeable during an erection. In many cases, this appearance may improve as the healing progresses, but it can take several weeks to a few months for the tissue to fully settle and for any swelling to diminish. If the tissue appears excessively swollen or if there are concerns about the appearance or function, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.

As for the use of topical anesthetic creams, it is essential to use them as directed by your physician. Long-term use of such creams can potentially lead to skin irritation or sensitivity, especially on delicate areas like the glans. It is crucial to follow your doctor's recommendations regarding the duration and frequency of application. If you notice any adverse effects, such as increased irritation or discomfort, you should discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider.

Regarding sexual activity, it is generally recommended to wait until the surgical site has healed sufficiently before resuming sexual intercourse. This usually means waiting at least 2 to 4 weeks after the procedure, but the exact timing can vary based on individual healing. It is essential to ensure that there is no pain, discomfort, or signs of infection before engaging in sexual activity. Your healthcare provider can give you personalized advice based on your healing progress.

In summary, the healing process after circumcision typically takes about 1 to 2 weeks, with complete recovery possibly extending to several weeks or months for full tissue settling. The appearance of residual skin or swelling is common and may improve over time. It is crucial to use any prescribed topical medications as directed and to consult your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about your healing process or if you experience any unusual symptoms. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider to ensure a smooth recovery and address any questions or concerns you may have.
