Is there a relationship between eczema and the liver?

Hello, Dr.
Jiang! I often experience itching below the back of my head, with a white patch that resembles dandruff.
I previously consulted a dermatologist who suggested it might be eczema and prescribed me a topical medication.
However, the doctor mentioned that it cannot be completely cured, so it recurs periodically.
Is there a connection between eczema and the liver? A traditional Chinese medicine practitioner said it is caused by my liver being unhealthy.
Is it really impossible to cure? Thank you!

Weiwei, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/05/15

Dr. Jiang Yujiao reply Dermatology

Hello: In response to your question, general eczema is not related to liver function.
Dandruff located below the occipital region can be treated with shampoos containing zinc pyrithione (Z.P.) or antifungal agents, and topical ointments can be applied.
Depending on the symptoms, it may resemble seborrheic dermatitis, which is related to lifestyle factors.

More Info

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by itchy, red, and dry patches of skin. It is a common condition that affects both children and adults and can be triggered by various factors, including allergens, irritants, stress, and environmental conditions. The question of whether there is a connection between eczema and liver health is a topic of interest in both dermatology and hepatology.

While eczema itself is primarily a skin condition, there are some theories and observations that suggest a potential link between liver health and skin conditions, including eczema. The liver plays a crucial role in detoxification, metabolism, and the regulation of various bodily functions. When the liver is not functioning optimally, it can lead to a buildup of toxins in the body, which may manifest in various ways, including skin issues.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the liver is believed to be closely related to the skin's health. TCM practitioners often associate skin conditions like eczema with liver dysfunction, particularly when there are symptoms such as irritability, mood swings, or digestive issues. The idea is that an imbalance in liver function can lead to an inability to properly detoxify the body, resulting in skin manifestations.

However, it is essential to note that while some individuals may experience skin issues related to liver health, this is not universally applicable. Eczema can occur in individuals with healthy liver function and may not necessarily indicate liver disease. The underlying causes of eczema are multifactorial, and while liver health may play a role in some cases, it is not a definitive cause of eczema for everyone.

Regarding the treatment of eczema, it is true that while many treatments can help manage symptoms, there is currently no cure for eczema. Treatment typically focuses on controlling symptoms and preventing flare-ups. This may include the use of topical corticosteroids, moisturizers, and antihistamines to alleviate itching. In some cases, more advanced treatments such as phototherapy or systemic medications may be recommended for severe cases.

If you are experiencing persistent eczema symptoms, it is advisable to continue working with your dermatologist to find an effective management plan. Additionally, if you have concerns about your liver health, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider who specializes in liver diseases. They can perform appropriate tests to assess your liver function and determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.

In summary, while there may be some connection between liver health and skin conditions like eczema, it is not a straightforward relationship. Eczema is a complex condition influenced by various factors, and while liver dysfunction can contribute to skin issues in some individuals, it is not the sole cause. Effective management of eczema typically involves a combination of skincare routines, lifestyle modifications, and medical treatments tailored to the individual's needs. If you have concerns about your liver health or the persistence of your eczema, seeking further evaluation from a healthcare professional is recommended.
