Diarrhea after taking traditional Chinese medicine?
Hello, doctor.
I have been feeling very weak, and I experience headaches and abdominal discomfort around the time of my menstrual period.
The blood flow is very light when I am inactive, so I went to see a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner to help regulate my body.
However, after taking the medicine, I experienced severe diarrhea, although I do not have any cramping in my abdomen.
What could be the reason for this? Thank you.

Dr. Ding Hanxiang reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Hello: You may have a problem with blood deficiency, so the physician will prescribe blood-nourishing medications such as Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai) and Polygonum multiflorum (He Shou Wu).
However, these medications can be quite rich, and individuals with gastrointestinal issues may experience diarrhea after taking them.
By adding medications to regulate the gastrointestinal system, diarrhea should not occur again.
Sincerely, Dr.
Ding Han-Hsiang, Attending Physician, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info
Diarrhea after taking Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can be a concerning side effect, especially for individuals who are already experiencing health issues. In your case, it seems that you are dealing with a combination of menstrual discomfort and overall weakness, which prompted you to seek TCM for treatment. However, the onset of diarrhea after starting the herbal regimen raises questions about the underlying causes and the appropriateness of the treatment.
Firstly, it is important to understand that TCM operates on a different paradigm compared to Western medicine. TCM focuses on balancing the body's internal energies (Qi), and it often uses herbal formulas to address specific symptoms and underlying imbalances. The herbs used in TCM can have potent effects on the digestive system, and some may act as laxatives or stimulate bowel movements. This could explain why you are experiencing diarrhea.
In your case, the absence of abdominal cramping along with diarrhea suggests that the herbs may be acting more as a purgative rather than causing irritation or inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. This can happen if the herbal formula contains ingredients that are meant to clear heat or dampness from the body, which are common TCM concepts. For example, certain herbs like rhubarb (Da Huang) are known for their strong purgative effects and can lead to loose stools or diarrhea.
Another possibility is that your body may be reacting to the specific herbs used in the formula. If your digestive system is particularly sensitive or if you have a pre-existing condition, the introduction of new herbs could lead to gastrointestinal disturbances. Additionally, if the herbs are warming or detoxifying in nature, they may provoke a reaction in someone whose body is already in a weakened state.
It is also worth considering the quality and preparation of the herbal medicine. TCM herbs can vary significantly in potency and purity, and if the herbs are not properly processed or if they contain contaminants, this could lead to adverse effects, including diarrhea.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult with the TCM practitioner who prescribed the herbs. They can assess your overall condition, review the specific herbs you are taking, and make necessary adjustments to your treatment plan. It may be beneficial to modify the dosage, switch to a different formula, or incorporate additional herbs that can help stabilize your digestive system.
In the meantime, it is essential to stay hydrated, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea. Drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or electrolyte solutions, can help prevent dehydration. Additionally, consider incorporating easily digestible foods into your diet, such as rice, bananas, and toast, which can help manage diarrhea.
In summary, diarrhea after taking TCM can result from the herbs' effects on the digestive system, individual sensitivities, or the quality of the herbal preparation. It is crucial to communicate with your TCM practitioner to ensure that your treatment aligns with your health needs and to make any necessary adjustments. Your health and comfort should always be the priority, and finding the right balance in your treatment will be key to achieving better overall well-being.
