Umbilical issues
I have yellow discharge coming from my belly button.
Is it tissue fluid? When the yellow substance dries, it forms crusty patches that I tend to pick off, but they easily break open and are painful, sometimes even bleeding.
My belly button has also become very red.
I've noticed this only happens during the summer, and it feels a bit itchy right after I wash it.
This started last summer.
Doctor, what kind of condition do I have?
Yīfú, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/05/30
Dr. Jiang Zheen reply Dermatology
I believe it is likely just simple eczema.
The most important thing is to avoid scratching it, keep the area as dry as possible, and make sure to pat it dry after bathing.
You can apply some eczema cream as needed.
Wishing you peace, and Jesus loves you.

More Info
It sounds like you're experiencing a concerning issue with your belly button, which is manifesting as yellow discharge, redness, and pain. Based on the symptoms you've described, there are several potential causes for your discomfort, and it's important to understand these in order to seek appropriate treatment.
Possible Causes
1. Infection: The yellow discharge you are noticing could be a sign of an infection, such as an umbilical infection (omphalitis). This is particularly common in individuals who may have had a recent injury or irritation to the area. The redness and pain you are experiencing further support this possibility. Infections can occur due to bacteria entering the skin, especially if there is any break in the skin barrier.
2. Dermatitis: Another possibility is that you are experiencing some form of dermatitis, which is an inflammation of the skin. This could be due to an allergic reaction to soaps, detergents, or even sweat, especially during the summer months when humidity is higher. The itching you mentioned after washing could indicate that your skin is reacting to something.
3. Cysts or Abscesses: Sometimes, sebaceous cysts can form in the belly button area, leading to discomfort and discharge. If these cysts become infected, they can produce pus, which may appear yellow and can be painful.
4. Fungal Infection: Given that you mentioned this issue arises primarily in the summer, a fungal infection could also be a possibility. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, and the belly button can be a prime location for such infections.
Recommended Treatments
1. Keep the Area Clean and Dry: It's crucial to maintain good hygiene. Gently clean the area with mild soap and water, and ensure it is thoroughly dried afterward. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing too hard, as this can irritate the skin further.
2. Avoid Picking at the Area: While it may be tempting to remove the yellow discharge, doing so can exacerbate the problem and lead to further irritation or infection. Instead, allow the area to heal naturally.
3. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter antiseptic creams or ointments may help reduce infection and promote healing. If you suspect a fungal infection, antifungal creams can be beneficial.
4. Consult a Healthcare Professional: Given that your symptoms have persisted since last summer and are causing you pain, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination, possibly take a culture of the discharge, and determine the exact cause of your symptoms. Depending on the diagnosis, they may prescribe antibiotics for an infection or recommend other treatments.
5. Monitor for Additional Symptoms: Keep an eye on any changes in your symptoms. If you experience increased redness, swelling, fever, or if the discharge becomes more pronounced, seek medical attention promptly.
Conclusion
Your symptoms warrant a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. While it may be tempting to self-diagnose or treat, professional guidance is crucial, especially if the condition persists or worsens. Remember, early intervention can prevent complications and lead to a quicker recovery.
