Issues After Circumcision

Hello Doctor: I recently underwent a circumcision procedure and would like to ask you a few questions: 1.
What methods can help reduce swelling more quickly? 2.
Are there any foods that should be avoided after circumcision? What should I eat to aid recovery? 3.
I read online that wearing briefs after the surgery can help reduce swelling; is this true? Thank you for your answers.

sam, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/06/07

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Sam: Hello, after the surgery, apply local ice packs for the first two days.
If there is still swelling afterward, you can switch to local heat therapy.
During this time, you can discuss with your surgeon about taking some medications to reduce swelling.
As for food, there don't seem to be any specific dietary restrictions.
Regarding clothing, it is generally recommended to wear loose-fitting attire after surgery.
Tight-fitting underwear may put pressure on the wound and cause pain, so I personally do not recommend it.
This is a response from Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of Urology, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

Post-circumcision care is crucial for ensuring a smooth recovery and minimizing discomfort. Here are some tips regarding swelling, diet, and comfort after the procedure.

1. Managing Swelling
Swelling is a common occurrence after circumcision, and there are several methods to help reduce it:
- Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the area can help reduce swelling and numb discomfort. Limit the application to 15-20 minutes at a time, with breaks in between to avoid frostbite.

- Elevation: Keeping the area elevated can also help reduce swelling. When resting, try to lie down with your legs elevated on pillows.

- Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help your body manage inflammation. Drink plenty of fluids, particularly water.

- Avoiding Strenuous Activity: Refrain from heavy lifting or vigorous activities for at least a week post-surgery, as these can exacerbate swelling.

2. Dietary Considerations
While there are no strict dietary restrictions following circumcision, certain foods can promote healing and comfort:
- High-Protein Foods: Foods rich in protein, such as lean meats, fish, eggs, and legumes, can aid in tissue repair and recovery.

- Fruits and Vegetables: Incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables into your diet for essential vitamins and minerals that support healing. Foods high in vitamin C, like oranges and bell peppers, can be particularly beneficial.

- Avoid Irritating Foods: It is advisable to avoid spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol, as they can potentially irritate the body and lead to discomfort or increased swelling.

- Fiber-Rich Foods: To prevent constipation, which can occur due to reduced mobility and pain medications, include fiber-rich foods such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables in your diet.

3. Comfort Measures
Regarding the use of underwear post-surgery, wearing supportive underwear can indeed help:
- Supportive Underwear: Wearing snug-fitting underwear, such as briefs or supportive athletic wear, can provide comfort and support to the surgical area. This can help minimize movement and reduce swelling.

- Avoiding Tight Clothing: While supportive underwear is beneficial, avoid tight pants or clothing that may rub against the area and cause irritation.

Additional Tips
- Follow Medical Advice: Always adhere to the post-operative care instructions provided by your healthcare provider. This includes any prescribed medications for pain management and infection prevention.

- Monitor for Complications: Keep an eye out for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge. If you notice any concerning symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

- Rest and Recovery: Allow your body time to heal. Rest is essential, and you should gradually resume normal activities as you feel comfortable.

In summary, managing swelling after circumcision involves cold compresses, elevation, and hydration. A balanced diet rich in protein and vitamins will support healing, while supportive underwear can enhance comfort. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and follow their recommendations for a smooth recovery.
