Lumps have developed on the chest?

There are multiple lumps that have developed on my chest, and I can't squeeze them out.
It hurts a lot when I try to squeeze them! They have been there for a long time, at least several years! I don't feel comfortable taking off my shirt at the beach, and I also have some on my left arm.

When it comes to painful bumps on the chest, there are several potential causes that could explain your symptoms. It’s important to understand that while some bumps may be benign, others could indicate a more serious condition. Here’s a breakdown of possible causes and solutions.

Possible Causes
1. Lipomas: These are benign tumors made of fat tissue. They are usually soft, movable, and painless, but if they press on nerves or other tissues, they can cause discomfort.

2. Sebaceous Cysts: These are small lumps beneath the skin that can become inflamed or infected, leading to pain. They are often filled with a thick, yellowish substance and can be squeezed, but doing so may cause infection or scarring.

3. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of hair follicles that can lead to painful bumps. It can be caused by bacteria, fungi, or irritation from shaving or tight clothing.

4. Dermatofibromas: These are small, firm bumps that can be tender to the touch. They are usually harmless but can be painful if they are located in an area that experiences friction.

5. Allergic Reactions: Sometimes, allergic reactions to medications, foods, or environmental factors can cause hives or welts that may be painful.

6. Infections: Conditions like shingles or other viral infections can cause painful bumps on the skin. These often come with additional symptoms like fever or fatigue.

7. Mastitis or Breast Abscess: In women, painful lumps in the breast area could be due to infections like mastitis, especially if there is swelling and redness.

8. Other Conditions: Rarely, more serious conditions such as tumors (benign or malignant) can present as painful lumps.

When to Seek Medical Attention
Given that these bumps have been present for several years and are painful, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. A dermatologist or primary care physician can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies (like an ultrasound) or a biopsy if necessary. This will help determine the exact nature of the bumps and whether they require treatment.

Treatment Options
1. Observation: If the bumps are benign and not causing significant discomfort, your doctor may recommend simply monitoring them over time.

2. Medication: If the bumps are due to an infection or inflammation, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications.

3. Surgical Removal: For persistent or bothersome bumps, surgical excision may be the best option. This is especially true for lipomas or cysts that cause pain or discomfort.

4. Topical Treatments: For conditions like folliculitis, topical antibiotics or anti-inflammatory creams may be effective.

5. Lifestyle Modifications: If the bumps are related to friction or irritation (like from clothing), wearing looser clothing or avoiding certain activities may help alleviate symptoms.

Conclusion
Painful bumps on the chest can arise from various causes, ranging from benign to more serious conditions. Since you’ve mentioned that these bumps have been present for several years and are painful, it’s crucial to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your specific situation. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so don’t hesitate to reach out for help.
