Is it a delayed period or pregnancy?

My girlfriend was supposed to get her period on July 30, but it's already afternoon and she hasn't started yet.
We had sexual intercourse, and although I didn't ejaculate inside, we didn't use a condom.
Since it was during her safe period, could this be a late period or could she be pregnant?

When it comes to understanding whether a late period is due to pregnancy or other factors, it’s essential to consider several aspects of the menstrual cycle, sexual activity, and the timing of ovulation.
Firstly, a typical menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can range from 21 to 35 days in healthy women. If your girlfriend's period was expected on July 30 and it hasn't arrived by the afternoon of that day, it could be classified as a late period. However, it’s important to note that various factors can cause a delay in menstruation, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, illness, or even changes in routine.

Given that you mentioned having unprotected sexual intercourse during what you believe to be a "safe period," it’s crucial to understand that while the "safe period" method can reduce the risk of pregnancy, it is not foolproof. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, and if ovulation occurs later than expected, there is still a possibility of conception.
If your girlfriend's cycle is typically regular and she is now late, the first step would be to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. For the most accurate result, it’s best to wait a few days after the missed period to take the test, as hCG levels will be higher and more detectable.

If the test is positive, it would indicate pregnancy, and it would be advisable for her to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and prenatal care. If the test is negative and her period still does not arrive, she should consult a healthcare professional to explore other potential causes for the delay.

In summary, while a late period can be a sign of pregnancy, it can also result from various other factors. Taking a pregnancy test is a straightforward way to clarify the situation. If there are any concerns about the results or if her period remains absent, seeking medical advice is the best course of action.
