Semen vs. Masturbation?

Hello, Doctor Hsu.
I have a question I would like to ask you.
When I have a bowel movement and strain a bit, it feels like something similar to semen is being expelled.
This has happened multiple times.
What could be the reason for this? Also, is masturbation good for me? Although I don't do it often, I do it about once or twice a month.
I'm not sure if that's good or bad.
Can you help me with this?

Yì Tíng, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/12/01

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, when you exert yourself during a bowel movement and experience the release of semen, this phenomenon can sometimes occur due to the seminal vesicles (the storage reservoirs for sperm) being overly full.
When the stool is hard, the pressure can cause the release of semen.
Masturbation generally does not cause health problems.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can further discuss and research this together.
Sincerely, Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director, Urology Department, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

Understanding the phenomenon of semen release during bowel movements and the effects of masturbation involves a combination of physiological and psychological factors.
Firstly, it is important to clarify that the sensation of releasing semen during bowel movements is not uncommon, especially among males. This can occur due to the close anatomical proximity of the rectum and the prostate gland. When you exert pressure during a bowel movement, it can stimulate the prostate, which may lead to the release of pre-ejaculatory fluid or even semen. This fluid is produced by the prostate and seminal vesicles and is a normal part of male reproductive physiology.
The presence of this fluid during bowel movements can be attributed to several factors. One possibility is that the pressure exerted on the pelvic floor muscles during straining can inadvertently stimulate the prostate. Additionally, if there is any residual semen in the urethra, it may be expelled during the act of straining. This is generally not a cause for concern unless accompanied by pain, discomfort, or other unusual symptoms.

Regarding masturbation, it is a normal and healthy sexual activity for most individuals. Engaging in masturbation has several benefits, including stress relief, improved mood, and a better understanding of one’s own body and sexual preferences. For most people, masturbating a couple of times a month is considered normal and healthy. It is important to note that there is no "right" or "wrong" frequency for masturbation; it varies greatly among individuals.

However, if you find that your bowel movements are consistently accompanied by the release of semen or if you experience any discomfort, pain, or changes in your bowel habits, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. They can help rule out any underlying medical conditions, such as prostatitis or other pelvic floor disorders, that may be contributing to this phenomenon.

In summary, the release of fluid during bowel movements can be a normal occurrence due to the anatomical and physiological connections between the rectum and the prostate. Masturbation, when done in moderation, is generally considered a healthy activity. If you have concerns about your experiences, especially if they are accompanied by other symptoms, seeking medical advice is always a good approach. Remember, open communication with a healthcare provider can help address any worries and provide reassurance regarding your sexual health and overall well-being.
