Lactation tea

Hello, Doctor: Since I gave birth two months ago, I would like to ask if there are any traditional Chinese medicine formulas that can increase milk secretion.
I currently know of two formulas and would like to ask if these two can indeed enhance milk production and if they are safe for general consumption.

Formula 1: Dandelion 6g, Summer Melon Herb 9g, Angelica Sinensis 3g, Honeysuckle 6g, Motherwort 9g, Red Dates 3-5 pieces.
Boil with three bowls of water, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
Strain the decoction, then repeat the process once more, mixing the two decoctions and taking them warm in 2-3 doses.
Formula 2: Angelica Sinensis 15g, Rehmannia 6g, Fried White Peony 7.5g, Chuanxiong 3g, Chinese Yam 15g, Codonopsis 30g, Astragalus 15g, Motherwort 3g.
Clean the herbs, place them in a pot, add four bowls of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer for 20 minutes until the volume is reduced to two bowls.
Could you please advise if these two formulas are safe for general use and if they have any effect on increasing milk secretion? Thank you!

Dr. Chu Baiqing reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Hello,
I am not familiar with your wife's constitution.
However, regarding your two prescriptions, the first one seems to address breast inflammation and difficulties in milk flow, while the second prescription is more suitable for general constitution.
Please evaluate whether the second prescription has promoted milk production for your wife.
Nonetheless, I still recommend bringing her in for a physician to assess her constitution for safety.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Sincerely,
Director Chu Boqing, Traditional Chinese Medicine Department

More Info

When it comes to herbal remedies for boosting breast milk production, there are several traditional formulations that have been used in various cultures. The two formulas you mentioned contain a combination of herbs that are often believed to support lactation. Let's break down the components of each formula and their potential effects on milk production.

Formula One:
1. Dandelion (蒲公英) - Traditionally used for its diuretic properties, dandelion is also thought to support liver health, which can indirectly affect milk production.

2. Summer Melon (夏枯草) - This herb is often used in traditional Chinese medicine for its cooling properties and is believed to help with inflammation.

3. Angelica (當歸) - Known for its blood-nourishing properties, Angelica is often used to support women's health, particularly in relation to menstruation and childbirth.

4. Honeysuckle (金銀花) - This herb is commonly used for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

5. Motherwort (王不留行) - Often used to promote uterine health and is believed to help with milk production.

6. Red Dates (紅棗) - Known for their nourishing properties, red dates are often included in herbal teas for postpartum recovery.

Formula Two:
1. Angelica (當歸) - As mentioned, it is used for blood nourishment.

2. Rehmannia (熟地) - Often used to tonify the blood and support kidney health.

3. White Peony (炒白芍) - Known for its ability to regulate menstruation and alleviate pain.

4. Chuanxiong (川芎) - Traditionally used to invigorate blood circulation.

5. Chinese Yam (淮山) - Known for its nourishing properties and is often used to support digestive health.

6. Codonopsis (黨參) - Often used as a substitute for ginseng, it is believed to enhance energy and support overall health.

7. Astragalus (黃耆) - Known for its immune-boosting properties, it is also thought to support energy levels.

8. Motherwort (王不留行) - Again, included for its potential lactation support.

Effectiveness and Safety:
Both formulas contain herbs that have been traditionally associated with lactation support. However, scientific evidence on their effectiveness specifically for increasing breast milk production is limited. While some women report positive results, individual responses can vary significantly.
In terms of safety, these herbal ingredients are generally considered safe for most individuals, but there are a few considerations:
- Allergies: Always check for potential allergies to any of the herbs.

- Interactions: Herbal remedies can interact with medications, so it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider if you are taking other medications.

- Dosage: The preparation and dosage should be followed as recommended. Overconsumption of certain herbs can lead to adverse effects.

General Recommendations:
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Before starting any herbal regimen, especially while breastfeeding, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare provider or a lactation consultant. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and current situation.

2. Hydration and Nutrition: Ensure you are well-hydrated and consuming a balanced diet, as these are fundamental to maintaining milk supply.

3. Frequent Nursing or Pumping: The more frequently you nurse or pump, the more milk your body is likely to produce. This is often the most effective way to increase milk supply.

In conclusion, while the herbal formulas you mentioned may have potential benefits for increasing breast milk production, it is essential to approach them with caution and seek professional guidance. The combination of proper nutrition, hydration, and frequent breastfeeding or pumping is often the most effective strategy for maintaining and boosting milk supply.
