Regarding the intrauterine device (IUD)?

Hello, Dr.
Hsu.
I saw your explanation about penile rings.
Since I have symptoms of erectile dysfunction, would using a penile ring be helpful? If I wear the ring during normal times, will it harm my penis? Or should it only be worn during sexual activity? Do all major hospitals' urology departments have these rings available? Do they come in different sizes? If I want to request a ring, does health insurance cover it? If not, how much does it typically cost? Thank you for your assistance.

Mr. Lin, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2008/01/03

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Mr.
Lin: Hello, the use of constriction rings is a remnant from a time when medical advancements were limited, and they are now rarely used.
Occasionally, there are users in specific professions (such as sex workers).
Most general hospitals no longer keep them in stock, and there are no issues related to health insurance coverage (they must be purchased out-of-pocket).
If a person is unable to achieve an erection, a vacuum erection device should be used prior to sexual activity to induce an erection, after which the constriction ring can be placed at the base of the penis.
It is important to remove the ring promptly after use to prevent penile necrosis.
If the individual can achieve an erection independently, there is no need for a vacuum device; the ring can be placed directly at the base of the erect penis.
Currently, medications have significantly improved compared to the past, so pharmacological treatment is now the primary approach.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again for further discussion and research.
Sincerely, Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of Urology, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

More Info

Penis rings, also known as cock rings, are devices designed to be worn around the base of the penis, and they can serve various purposes, particularly for individuals experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED). Understanding their benefits, risks, and availability is essential for anyone considering their use.

Benefits of Penis Rings
1. Enhanced Erections: One of the primary benefits of using a penis ring is that it can help maintain an erection by restricting blood flow out of the penis. This can be particularly beneficial for men with ED, as it may allow for a firmer and longer-lasting erection during sexual activity.

2. Increased Sensation: Some users report heightened sensitivity and pleasure during sexual activity when using a penis ring. The constriction can lead to increased blood flow and engorgement of the penis, which may enhance sexual pleasure.

3. Delayed Ejaculation: For some men, wearing a penis ring can help delay ejaculation, allowing for longer sexual experiences. This can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with premature ejaculation.

Risks of Penis Rings
1. Circulation Issues: If a penis ring is too tight or worn for an extended period, it can lead to circulation problems. This may result in pain, numbness, or even injury to the penis. It is crucial to ensure that the ring is snug but not overly tight.

2. Skin Irritation: Some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions to the material of the ring. It is advisable to choose rings made from body-safe materials, such as silicone or rubber.

3. Potential for Injury: Improper use of a penis ring can lead to injury. It is essential to follow the manufacturer's guidelines regarding usage duration and fit.

Usage Recommendations
- When to Wear: It is generally recommended to wear a penis ring only during sexual activity. Wearing it for extended periods, especially when not engaged in sexual activity, may lead to discomfort or injury.

- Sizing: Penis rings come in various sizes. It is essential to choose a size that fits comfortably without being too tight. Many manufacturers provide sizing guides to help users select the appropriate size.

Availability and Insurance Coverage
- Availability: Penis rings are widely available at pharmacies, adult stores, and online retailers. Most urology departments in hospitals may also carry them or can provide recommendations on where to purchase them.

- Insurance Coverage: Typically, penis rings are considered a personal item and are not covered by health insurance. Prices can vary widely depending on the material and brand, ranging from $10 to $50 or more. It is advisable to check with specific retailers for exact pricing.

Conclusion
In summary, penis rings can be a helpful tool for individuals experiencing erectile dysfunction, offering benefits such as enhanced erections and increased sexual pleasure. However, it is crucial to use them correctly to avoid potential risks. If you are considering using a penis ring, consult with a healthcare provider or urologist to discuss your specific situation and receive personalized advice. They can help you determine if a penis ring is appropriate for you and guide you on proper usage.
