It feels like a swarm of mosquitoes biting..?

I have developed numerous itchy bumps on my arms and legs that resemble mosquito bites.
They are located on the inner thighs, back of the calves, knees, elbows, wrists, arms, chin, and back—approximately 20 areas in total.
The itching is unbearable, and scratching only makes it worse.
I can only try to endure it or distract myself.
What could this be? It started suddenly last night.

More Info

Itchy bumps on the skin can be quite bothersome and may arise from a variety of causes. Given the description of your symptoms—itchy, mosquito bite-like bumps appearing suddenly on multiple areas of your body such as the inner thighs, back of the calves, knees, elbows, wrists, arms, chin, and back—there are several potential explanations to consider.

Possible Causes
1. Allergic Reactions: One of the most common causes of itchy bumps is an allergic reaction. This could be due to food, medications, or environmental allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. Contact dermatitis, which occurs when the skin comes into contact with an irritant or allergen, could also lead to such symptoms.

2. Insect Bites: The appearance of bumps that resemble mosquito bites suggests that you may have been bitten by insects. Fleas, mosquitoes, or even bed bugs can cause localized swelling and intense itching.

3. Hives (Urticaria): Hives are raised, itchy welts that can appear suddenly and are often triggered by allergic reactions, stress, or certain medications. They can vary in size and may come and go quickly.

4. Eczema: If you have a history of eczema or atopic dermatitis, flare-ups can cause itchy, red bumps on various parts of the body. This condition is often exacerbated by environmental factors or irritants.

5. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can result in red, itchy bumps. It can be caused by bacterial or fungal infections, irritation from shaving, or blockage of the follicles.

6. Viral Infections: Certain viral infections, such as chickenpox or shingles, can cause itchy bumps or rashes. If you have other symptoms like fever or malaise, this could be a consideration.

7. Heat Rash: If you are in a hot and humid environment, heat rash can develop, leading to small, itchy bumps that can be uncomfortable.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting to scratch the itchy areas, this can lead to further irritation or even infection. Try to keep your nails short and consider wearing gloves if necessary.

2. Cool Compresses: Applying a cool, damp cloth to the affected areas can help soothe itching and reduce inflammation.

3. Over-the-Counter Antihistamines: Medications like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or cetirizine (Zyrtec) can help alleviate itching caused by allergic reactions or hives.

4. Topical Treatments: Hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion can provide relief from itching and inflammation. For more severe cases, a prescription topical steroid may be necessary.

5. Moisturizers: If the bumps are related to dry skin or eczema, applying a fragrance-free moisturizer can help keep the skin hydrated and reduce irritation.

6. Identify Triggers: If you suspect an allergic reaction, try to identify and avoid potential triggers. Keeping a diary of your activities, food intake, and any new products used can help pinpoint the cause.

7. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as fever, swelling, or difficulty breathing, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, possibly conduct allergy testing, and recommend appropriate treatments.

In summary, while itchy bumps can arise from various causes, identifying the underlying issue is key to effective treatment. If your symptoms continue or escalate, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for further evaluation and management.
