Sperm becomes transparent?
During my military service, I began to notice that my semen would sometimes have a transparent solid component that liquefied after about 20 minutes.
Recently, I have observed that my semen is no longer as opaque as it used to be during high school and college, where it was mostly white or slightly yellow with low transparency.
I typically ejaculate 2-3 times a week without long interruptions.
Initially, I thought the transparency of my semen might be due to infrequent ejaculation.
However, after storing it for nearly two weeks, I found that the semen I ejaculated had a transparency level of over 80%, with a slight yellow tint.
This does not seem to be related to frequent ejaculation.
I do not consume alcohol or tobacco and maintain a consistent exercise routine.
My testicles do not show any signs of abnormal swelling, although I sometimes experience slight itching.
I would like to consult with a physician based on your years of experience regarding the following: 1.
Does the transparency of semen affect fertility? 2.
What could be the potential causes for the change in semen color from normal white to slightly transparent? 3.
Is there any relation between the occasional slight itching in the testicles (not in the scrotum)?

Dr. Yan Dawei reply Urology
In response to your question: Semen becoming clear or slightly transparent is not necessarily abnormal and may not affect fertility.
A semen analysis and physical examination are required to gain a better understanding.
It is recommended to visit a urology clinic for further detailed evaluation.

Understanding changes in semen can be a complex topic, as it involves various factors related to male reproductive health, hormonal balance, and lifestyle choices. Let's address your concerns regarding the changes you've observed in your semen, particularly its transparency, potential impacts on fertility, and any associated testicular symptoms.
1. Does the transparency of semen affect fertility?
The transparency of semen can vary due to several factors, including hydration levels, frequency of ejaculation, and overall health. Generally, healthy semen is typically a whitish color, and changes in color or consistency can sometimes indicate underlying issues. However, transparency alone is not a definitive indicator of fertility. The key factors that influence fertility include sperm count, motility (the ability of sperm to swim), and morphology (the shape and structure of sperm). If your semen is transparent but still contains a sufficient number of healthy sperm, it may not significantly impact your fertility. However, if you have concerns about your fertility, it is advisable to undergo a semen analysis to assess these parameters.
2. What could cause semen to change from normal white to transparent?
Several factors can contribute to changes in the appearance of semen. Frequent ejaculation can lead to a decrease in the concentration of sperm and seminal fluid, resulting in a more transparent appearance. Additionally, hydration levels play a crucial role; increased fluid intake can dilute the semen, making it appear clearer. Other potential causes for changes in semen color include infections, hormonal imbalances, or the presence of certain medical conditions. If the change in color is accompanied by other symptoms, such as pain, swelling, or unusual discharge, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
3. Is there a connection between mild itching in the testicles and semen changes?
Mild itching in the testicles can be caused by various factors, including irritation, allergies, or infections. While it may not directly relate to the changes in your semen, it is essential to monitor any accompanying symptoms. If the itching persists or is accompanied by redness, swelling, or discharge, it could indicate an infection or other underlying issue that requires medical attention. Maintaining good hygiene and avoiding irritants can help alleviate mild itching, but if symptoms persist, a consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended.
In summary, while changes in semen transparency can be concerning, they do not automatically indicate fertility issues. Factors such as hydration, frequency of ejaculation, and overall health play significant roles in semen quality. If you are experiencing persistent changes or additional symptoms, it is advisable to seek a thorough evaluation from a healthcare professional, who can provide personalized insights and recommendations based on your specific situation. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider can help ensure optimal reproductive health and address any concerns you may have.
