Chest pain when breathing?

Hello Doctor: I am currently 9 months pregnant, with a due date of March 31.
However, for the past two days, I have been experiencing chest pain when I breathe.
This occurs even while I am sleeping, whether I am lying flat or on my side.
If I take a deep breath, it becomes very painful.
I have never experienced this before.
I would like to inquire about the possible causes and which specialist I should consult.
Thank you for your response.

Meimei, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2008/03/03

Experiencing chest pain while breathing during pregnancy can be concerning, especially as you approach your due date. There are several potential causes for this symptom, and understanding them can help you determine the best course of action.

Possible Causes of Chest Pain During Pregnancy
1. Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy leads to significant hormonal changes that can affect the ligaments and muscles in your body. The hormone relaxin, for example, helps to loosen the ligaments in preparation for childbirth, which can sometimes lead to discomfort or pain in the chest area.

2. Physical Changes: As your pregnancy progresses, your body undergoes various physical changes. The growing uterus can push against the diaphragm and rib cage, leading to discomfort or pain when breathing deeply. This pressure can be more pronounced when lying down or in certain positions.

3. Musculoskeletal Pain: Many pregnant women experience musculoskeletal pain due to the added weight and changes in posture. This can manifest as pain in the chest area, especially if you have been sleeping in a position that strains your back or chest muscles.

4. Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. It can cause sharp pain in the chest, especially when taking deep breaths or coughing. This condition is not uncommon during pregnancy due to the physical changes your body is undergoing.

5. Anxiety and Stress: Pregnancy can be a stressful time, and anxiety can manifest physically, leading to chest pain or discomfort. Hyperventilation, which can occur during anxiety episodes, may also cause chest pain.

6. More Serious Conditions: While less common, it’s essential to rule out serious conditions such as pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs) or other cardiovascular issues. Symptoms like sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, or swelling in the legs should prompt immediate medical attention.

Recommended Actions
1. Consult Your Healthcare Provider: Given that you are experiencing chest pain while breathing, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider. They may refer you to a specialist, such as a cardiologist or pulmonologist, to rule out any serious conditions.

2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, including when they occur, their intensity, and any accompanying symptoms (like shortness of breath, dizziness, or swelling). This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

3. Adjust Sleeping Positions: Experiment with different sleeping positions. Elevating your upper body with pillows may relieve pressure on your chest and make breathing more comfortable.

4. Practice Relaxation Techniques: If anxiety is a contributing factor, consider practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or prenatal yoga, which can help alleviate stress and improve your overall well-being.

5. Stay Hydrated and Rest: Ensure you are drinking enough fluids and getting adequate rest. Fatigue can exacerbate discomfort and pain.

6. Avoid Strenuous Activities: If you notice that certain activities or movements trigger your chest pain, try to avoid them and give your body time to rest and recover.

Conclusion
While chest pain during pregnancy can be caused by various factors, it is essential to take it seriously and seek medical advice. Your healthcare provider will be able to assess your symptoms, provide a proper diagnosis, and recommend appropriate treatment or management strategies. Remember, your health and the health of your baby are paramount, so don’t hesitate to reach out for help.
