Root canal treatment
I had a root canal treatment at the dentist on March 20, and today I noticed that my face is swollen.
I want to see a doctor, but the clinic is closed for the next couple of days.
I went to the pharmacy and bought anti-inflammatory and pain relief medication to take.
Is it okay if I wait until Monday to go back to the clinic?

Due to the weekend, the responsible personnel are also on leave, so we are unable to provide timely advice.
If the situation is severe and you are experiencing significant discomfort, large hospitals can offer dental emergency services.

After undergoing a root canal treatment, experiencing swelling and pain is not uncommon. The root canal procedure involves cleaning the infected or damaged pulp from the inside of the tooth, which can lead to inflammation and discomfort as the body begins to heal. However, significant swelling, especially if it is accompanied by severe pain, could indicate complications such as an infection or an abscess.
In your case, since you noticed swelling in your face after the treatment on March 20, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. Swelling can occur as a normal part of the healing process, but if it worsens or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, increased pain, or discharge, it may indicate an infection that requires immediate attention.
Taking anti-inflammatory and pain relief medications, as you have done, can help manage your symptoms temporarily. Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be effective in reducing pain and swelling. However, these medications are not a substitute for professional dental care, especially if there is a possibility of an infection.
It is advisable to visit your dentist as soon as possible, particularly if your dental office is open on Monday. They will be able to assess the situation more thoroughly, possibly taking X-rays to determine if there is any underlying issue that needs to be addressed. If an infection is present, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to help clear it up.
In the meantime, here are some additional tips to help manage your symptoms:
1. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek can help reduce swelling and numb the pain. Make sure to wrap ice in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin.
2. Rest: Avoid strenuous activities that could exacerbate the swelling and pain. Resting allows your body to focus on healing.
3. Diet: Stick to soft foods that require minimal chewing. Avoid hot, spicy, or acidic foods that could irritate the area.
4. Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene, but be gentle around the treated area. Rinse with warm salt water to help reduce inflammation and promote healing.
5. Follow-Up Care: Make sure to keep all follow-up appointments with your dentist. They will monitor your healing process and address any complications that may arise.
In conclusion, while it is reasonable to wait until your dentist is available, be vigilant about your symptoms. If you notice any worsening of your condition, consider seeking emergency dental care. Your health and comfort are paramount, and timely intervention can prevent further complications.
