Will wearing glasses for nearsightedness worsen the condition?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask if wearing glasses continuously can worsen my myopia.
If I have myopia of 200 degrees and my glasses are also prescribed for 200 degrees, will my myopia continue to worsen if I wear them both day and night? I have heard that it's not advisable to wear glasses all the time, even if the prescription is correct, because prolonged use can lead to a deeper degree of myopia.
Is this true? Thank you.

KK, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2008/03/30

Dr. Hu Yusheng reply Ophthalmology

Hello Mr.
KK! Wearing glasses does not increase myopia; poor visual habits are the main cause.
Generally, for mild to moderate myopia (defined as not exceeding -6.00 diopters), the degree does not increase after adulthood.
We recommend wearing appropriately prescribed glasses.
Wishing you health and safety.
Thank you!

Wearing glasses does not inherently worsen myopia (nearsightedness). In fact, glasses are designed to correct your vision and help you see clearly. If you have a prescription of -2.00 diopters (200 degrees) and wear glasses that match this prescription, you are simply compensating for your refractive error. However, there are several factors to consider regarding myopia progression and the use of glasses.

Firstly, myopia is primarily influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Studies have shown that prolonged near work, such as reading or using screens, can contribute to the progression of myopia. This is particularly true for children and adolescents, whose eyes are still developing. Therefore, while wearing glasses does not cause myopia to worsen, the activities you engage in while wearing them can play a significant role in the progression of your condition.

The idea that wearing glasses all the time can worsen myopia is a common misconception. Some people believe that if you wear glasses constantly, your eyes will become "dependent" on them, leading to a worsening of your vision. However, this is not supported by scientific evidence. Glasses do not change the shape of your eyeball or the underlying refractive error; they simply provide a means to see more clearly.

That said, it is essential to ensure that your glasses are correctly prescribed and fit well. Poorly fitting glasses or an incorrect prescription can lead to eye strain, discomfort, and headaches, which may make you feel like your vision is worsening. If you experience discomfort while wearing your glasses, it is advisable to consult with an eye care professional to ensure your prescription is accurate and your glasses fit properly.

Moreover, if you are concerned about the progression of your myopia, there are several strategies you can adopt to help manage it. These include:
1. Regular Eye Exams: Regular check-ups with an eye care professional can help monitor your vision and detect any changes early on. If your myopia is progressing, your eye doctor can adjust your prescription accordingly.

2. Limit Near Work: Try to take breaks from close-up activities. The 20-20-20 rule is a helpful guideline: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This can help reduce eye strain.

3. Outdoor Time: Spending time outdoors has been shown to have a protective effect against the progression of myopia. Natural light exposure and the opportunity to focus on distant objects can be beneficial for eye health.

4. Consider Myopia Control Options: If you are concerned about myopia progression, discuss with your eye care provider about options such as orthokeratology (special contact lenses worn overnight to reshape the cornea), multifocal contact lenses, or atropine eye drops, which have been shown to slow myopia progression in some children and adolescents.

In conclusion, wearing glasses does not worsen myopia. Instead, they are a tool to help you see better. However, it is crucial to maintain good eye care habits and consult with an eye care professional if you have concerns about your vision or myopia progression. By taking proactive steps, you can help manage your myopia effectively and maintain your eye health.
