Hit by a ball in a sensitive area?

Hello doctor, a few days ago while playing softball with friends, I was hit in the groin by a rebounding ball.
However, the pain subsided after a few minutes, and I only felt a tingling sensation.
In the past couple of days, I've noticed that when urinating, there seems to be less strength.
I can still achieve an erection during masturbation, but it doesn't feel as firm as before.
Should I be concerned that I might have injured my groin and need further examination?

Taro: Hello, I suggest that you examine your testicles by feeling them to see if they are of equal size, if the surface is smooth, and if there are any bruises or pain.
If you do not find any significant issues, observation should suffice.
However, if you feel there is a problem, further examination may be necessary.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.

More Info

Testicular injuries can be concerning, especially after a direct impact, such as being hit by a baseball. It's important to understand the potential implications of such injuries and when to seek medical attention.

From your description, it seems that you experienced an acute injury to the testicles, which initially caused pain that subsided shortly after the incident. This is a common response, as the body can sometimes quickly adapt to minor trauma. However, the subsequent symptoms you mentioned—specifically, a feeling of weakness or reduced firmness during erections—are noteworthy and warrant further consideration.

When to Seek Medical Attention
1. Persistent Pain or Discomfort: If you experience ongoing pain, swelling, or tenderness in the testicles, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. While initial pain may subside, persistent discomfort can indicate underlying issues such as bruising, hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels), or even testicular torsion.

2. Changes in Urination: You mentioned that you noticed a change in your ability to urinate. If you experience difficulty urinating, blood in your urine, or any other significant changes, these could be signs of a more serious injury that requires immediate evaluation.

3. Erectile Dysfunction: The change in the firmness of your erections is concerning. While temporary changes can occur after trauma, persistent erectile dysfunction can indicate nerve damage or vascular issues that may need to be addressed.

4. Swelling or Bruising: If you notice any swelling, bruising, or discoloration in the scrotal area, this could be a sign of a more severe injury. In such cases, imaging studies like an ultrasound may be necessary to assess the extent of the injury.

5. Fever or Signs of Infection: If you develop a fever, chills, or any signs of infection (such as redness, warmth, or discharge), you should seek medical attention immediately.

What to Expect During Evaluation
If you decide to seek medical attention, the healthcare provider will likely perform a physical examination and may order imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to evaluate the testicles and surrounding structures. This can help identify any internal bleeding, swelling, or damage to the testicular tissue.

Treatment Options
Treatment will depend on the severity of the injury. Minor injuries may only require rest, ice application, and over-the-counter pain relief. However, more severe injuries, such as a testicular rupture or torsion, may require surgical intervention.

Conclusion
In summary, while it is common to experience some discomfort after a testicular injury, any persistent changes in function, pain, or other symptoms should not be ignored. It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation to rule out any serious injuries and to ensure appropriate management. Early intervention can help prevent complications and promote recovery.
