Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
I would like to ask the doctor again, do I need to take traditional Chinese medicine for a longer period to improve my acid reflux problem? Is it possible to completely cure acid reflux? I previously saw a Western doctor but did not see significant results, so I switched to traditional Chinese medicine and have experienced considerable improvement.
However, after taking the medicine for over a month, I still occasionally have flare-ups, and it seems that I cannot make further progress in improving this condition.
I never had this issue before; it suddenly appeared after the New Year this year, which makes me very worried.
Thank you, doctor.

Dear Nick/0/22 user,
1.
Your condition is suspected to be chronic gastric ulcer or chronic duodenal ulcer.
In Western medicine, there are many factors that can contribute to the diagnosis, including stress, which may lead to prolonged healing.
However, in recent years, the presence of Helicobacter pylori in the stomach has been hypothesized as one of the causes of chronic duodenal ulcers.
Therefore, Western medicine often prescribes antibiotics to treat duodenal ulcers.
2.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment typically requires a longer duration, and dietary and emotional adjustments are necessary to reduce the intake of spicy and irritating foods.
3.
The herbal prescription you are taking is a common TCM formula.
You may consider adding heat-clearing herbs and liver-regulating herbs to your regimen for a combined effect.
4.
Treatment for chronic gastric or duodenal ulcers, whether through Western or Chinese medicine, requires long-term medication to prevent recurrence.
It is best to follow a precise diagnosis based on TCM methods such as pulse diagnosis to tailor the treatment to your condition.
Additionally, managing your emotional well-being is essential; avoid stress and tension, as well as hard, spicy, and sour foods, to improve your condition.
Finally, I wish you well.

More Info
Managing acid reflux can be a complex process, and it's understandable that you're seeking effective treatment options. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a different approach compared to Western medicine, focusing on balancing the body's internal systems rather than just alleviating symptoms.
In TCM, acid reflux is often viewed as a disharmony within the body, typically involving the stomach and spleen. The treatment may include herbal remedies, acupuncture, and dietary adjustments aimed at restoring balance. Common herbs used in TCM for acid reflux include licorice root, ginger, and hawthorn berry, which are believed to strengthen the digestive system and reduce symptoms.
Regarding your question about the duration of treatment, TCM often requires a longer commitment compared to Western medicine. While some patients may experience improvements within a few weeks, others might need several months of consistent treatment to achieve significant results. This is because TCM aims to address the root cause of the condition rather than just the symptoms. Therefore, it is essential to maintain open communication with your TCM practitioner about your progress and any concerns you may have.
As for the possibility of completely curing acid reflux, it can vary from person to person. Some individuals may find that their symptoms improve significantly and become manageable with lifestyle changes and TCM treatments, while others might continue to experience occasional flare-ups. Factors such as diet, stress levels, and overall health can influence the effectiveness of treatment.
It's also worth noting that lifestyle modifications play a crucial role in managing acid reflux. These may include avoiding trigger foods (such as spicy or fatty foods), eating smaller meals, not lying down immediately after eating, and maintaining a healthy weight. Incorporating these changes alongside TCM treatment can enhance your chances of achieving better control over your symptoms.
If you've been experiencing acid reflux for a relatively short period, such as since the beginning of the year, it may take time for your body to adjust and heal. Stress and dietary changes can significantly impact digestive health, and it's essential to be patient as you explore different treatment options.
In summary, while TCM can provide relief and improve your condition, it may require a longer duration of treatment to see substantial results. It's crucial to work closely with your TCM practitioner, adhere to their recommendations, and make necessary lifestyle changes to support your healing process. If you continue to experience significant symptoms, consider discussing your concerns with both your TCM practitioner and a Western medicine provider to ensure a comprehensive approach to your health.
