Does Wearing Glasses Cause Vision Decline? Eye Health - Ophthalmology

My vision became blurry without my glasses?

Hello Doctor, earlier this year I had my vision tested and both of my eyes measured -1.75 diopters, so the optical shop provided me with glasses with a prescription of -1.75.
Since that day, I have been wearing them almost every day when I go out (to school).
However, I recently noticed that when I don't wear my glasses, my vision seems to be blurrier than it was before I started wearing them.
Is this because wearing glasses for a long time can lead to a decline in vision, or is it simply that I have become accustomed to wearing glasses, making it difficult to see clearly without them? Should I continue to wear my glasses all the time, or is it okay not to wear them when it's not necessary? I'm really worried that wearing glasses will cause my vision to deteriorate further.
Thank you very much.

Dear Xiao Zhi, you have become accustomed to wearing glasses with corrective lenses.
When you take them off to look at distant objects, it may indeed be unclear; however, for close-up reading, the prescription is not strong, so you should have no issues without your glasses.
Routine vision tests typically refer to corrected vision rather than uncorrected vision, so there is no need to worry.
However, I also remind you to regularly monitor the changes in your myopia and vision.
Wishing you good health.

Wearing glasses does not inherently cause vision decline; rather, it is often a matter of adaptation and the underlying condition of your eyes. When you first start wearing glasses, especially if you have a refractive error like myopia (nearsightedness), your brain begins to rely on the corrected vision provided by the lenses. This adjustment can lead to a perception that your uncorrected vision is worse than it was before you started wearing glasses.
In your case, since you mentioned that your prescription is -1.75 diopters for both eyes, it is likely that your eyes have a natural tendency towards myopia. When you wear glasses, you are correcting this refractive error, allowing you to see clearly. However, if you take off your glasses, your uncorrected vision may feel more blurred than it did before you started wearing them. This is not because the glasses have worsened your vision, but rather because your brain has adapted to the clearer vision provided by the glasses.

It's also important to note that the progression of myopia is influenced by various factors, including genetics, the amount of time spent on near work (like reading or using screens), and outdoor activity. Wearing glasses does not prevent the natural progression of myopia; it simply corrects your vision while you are wearing them.
If you are concerned about your vision getting worse, it is essential to maintain regular eye examinations with an optometrist or ophthalmologist. They can monitor your eye health and vision changes over time. If your prescription changes significantly, they can provide guidance on how to manage your vision effectively.

Regarding whether you should continue wearing your glasses, it depends on your daily activities. If you find that you need clear vision for tasks such as reading, driving, or attending classes, it is advisable to wear your glasses. However, if you are in a situation where you do not require clear vision, such as at home or during leisure activities, you may choose to take them off.
In summary, wearing glasses does not cause your vision to decline. Instead, it helps you see more clearly. If you have concerns about your vision or the progression of myopia, consult with your eye care professional for personalized advice and management strategies. They can help you understand your specific situation and provide recommendations tailored to your needs. Remember, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including taking breaks from screens and spending time outdoors, can also contribute positively to your eye health.
