Which department should I consult for suspected lipoma?

Hello! I have noticed two protrusions in my left calf, which resemble small lumps.
Normally, there should only be one, right? However, I clearly have two small lumps, one above the other.
They have no defined edges, are not painful, and I have never experienced any pain from them.
Five years ago, I consulted an orthopedic surgeon who mentioned that they might be fat deposits.
Since they have been present for many years, I still have concerns and would like to seek further evaluation.
Which specialist should I consult at your hospital? Thank you!

Hello! It sounds like you have some concerns regarding the persistent fatty lumps on your leg, which you described as resembling "radishes." Given that these lumps have been present for several years without causing pain or discomfort, they may indeed be lipomas, which are benign tumors made up of fat tissue. However, it's always wise to seek a professional opinion, especially since they have been present for such a long time.

For your situation, I would recommend consulting with a dermatologist first. Dermatologists specialize in skin conditions and can provide a thorough examination of the lumps. They can determine whether these lumps are indeed lipomas or if they might be something else, such as cysts or other types of growths. If the dermatologist suspects that the lumps require further evaluation or treatment, they may refer you to a plastic surgeon or an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in soft tissue masses.

When you visit the dermatologist, be prepared to discuss your medical history, any changes in the lumps over time, and any other symptoms you may have experienced. The dermatologist may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, order imaging studies like an ultrasound or MRI to get a better look at the lumps beneath the skin. In some cases, a biopsy may be performed to definitively diagnose the nature of the lumps.

If it turns out that the lumps are indeed lipomas and they are not causing any discomfort or functional issues, treatment may not be necessary. However, if you find them bothersome or if there are any changes in size or appearance, surgical removal could be an option.
In summary, start with a consultation with a dermatologist, who can assess your condition and guide you on the next steps. It's important to address your concerns, especially since these lumps have been present for a long time. Don't hesitate to seek medical advice to ensure peace of mind regarding your health. Thank you for reaching out, and I wish you the best in your journey towards clarity and health!
