Lymph node

Hello, Doctor: There are round lumps on both sides of my Adam's apple.
After visiting an ENT clinic, the doctor said they are lymph nodes, which many people have.
The doctor prescribed medication and mentioned that if they don't go away, there's no need to worry about them.
Could you please explain why these develop? Will more appear in the future? Additionally, is it true that if they don't disappear, I shouldn't be concerned?

Lai, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2008/07/28

Dr. Hong Guangliang reply Otolaryngology

Hello, regarding neck masses, there are two very important factors: the duration and the size.
Since I cannot determine these from your message, I am unable to provide a more definitive answer.
I suggest you consult several physicians or follow up on this matter.
The masses on either side of the Adam's apple could also be related to the thyroid!

Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that play a crucial role in the body's immune system. They are part of the lymphatic system, which helps to filter harmful substances and fight infections. When lymph nodes become enlarged, it can be a sign that the body is responding to an infection, inflammation, or, in some cases, malignancy.
In your case, the presence of round lumps on both sides of your throat, identified as lymph nodes by an ENT specialist, is quite common. Many people have palpable lymph nodes, especially in areas like the neck, underarms, and groin. These nodes can become enlarged due to various reasons, including infections (like a cold or throat infection), inflammatory conditions, or even benign processes like reactive hyperplasia, which is a normal response of the immune system to stimuli.

The fact that your doctor prescribed medication suggests that they may have identified an underlying infection or inflammation that could be contributing to the enlargement of your lymph nodes. It's important to understand that while many lymph nodes can remain enlarged for a period of time, they often return to their normal size once the underlying issue is resolved.
Regarding your concerns about whether these lymph nodes will continue to grow or if more will appear, it's difficult to predict. Factors such as your overall health, immune system status, and exposure to infections can influence lymph node behavior. If your immune system is frequently activated due to infections or other conditions, you may notice more lymph nodes becoming palpable.

As for the question of whether you should be concerned if they do not disappear, it largely depends on the context. If the lymph nodes remain stable in size and are not associated with other concerning symptoms (such as unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or persistent fever), they are often monitored rather than treated. However, if you notice any changes in the size, consistency, or number of lymph nodes, or if you develop new symptoms, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider.

In summary, lymph nodes can become enlarged for various benign reasons, and while they may not always return to their original size, many do resolve over time. Continuous monitoring and communication with your healthcare provider are essential to ensure that any changes are appropriately evaluated. If you have ongoing concerns or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice. Regular check-ups can help provide peace of mind and ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
