Health issues
Irregular menstrual periods, with approximately two months of absence, have recently been accompanied by sudden breast tenderness for about a week, and menstruation has still not occurred.
Occasionally, there is a discharge of light brown liquid, along with frequent shoulder, neck, and back pain, persistent acne breakouts, and a throat that often feels phlegmy.
There are also gastrointestinal discomforts with rumbling sounds and belching.
A previous health check indicated polycythemia and low mean corpuscular volume.
I am unsure how to improve these conditions.
Thank you.

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Dear Circle,
I am glad to receive your letter.
The issues you mentioned regarding missed menstruation, breast tenderness, bowel sounds, belching, phlegm in the throat, and shoulder pain can be addressed by a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner.
However, I believe you would prefer to recover without needing to see a doctor, correct?
The absence of menstruation accompanied by brown discharge indicates that menstruation is being obstructed and unable to flow smoothly.
This may be due to excessive consumption of cold beverages, swimming in cold water, washing hair with cold water, or sitting or lying on damp, cold floors.
Next time, simply avoid "excessive cold beverages, swimming in cold water, washing hair with cold water, excessive air conditioning, or sitting or lying on damp, cold floors" before and during your menstrual period to restore normalcy.
If these factors do not apply, please consult a gynecologist to check hormone levels through blood tests and to regulate your menstrual cycle.
As for bowel sounds, belching, phlegm in the throat, and shoulder and back pain, these are also related to "excessive cold beverages, swimming in cold water, washing hair with cold water, excessive air conditioning, or sitting or lying on damp, cold floors." Acne is a common occurrence during puberty; if it appears around the chin and mouth, it may be related to menstruation.
If it appears in other areas, there is generally no need for concern, as it typically resolves after puberty.
Thank you for your letter.
I hope my responses are satisfactory.
Wishing you peace and success,

More Info
Irregular menstrual cycles can be a source of concern for many women, and the symptoms you describe—such as breast tenderness, shoulder and back pain, acne, throat phlegm, and gastrointestinal discomfort—can be indicative of underlying hormonal imbalances or other health issues. Given that you have not had your period for nearly two months and are experiencing these additional symptoms, it is essential to approach this situation with a comprehensive understanding of potential causes and solutions.
Firstly, irregular menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, weight changes, and underlying medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders. Stress, in particular, can significantly impact the hypothalamus, which regulates the menstrual cycle. If you have been experiencing increased stress or lifestyle changes, this could be a contributing factor.
The breast tenderness you are experiencing may be related to hormonal fluctuations, particularly if your menstrual cycle is irregular. This symptom is often associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or other hormonal changes. The presence of brownish discharge can sometimes indicate old blood, which may occur if your body is preparing for a period that has not yet arrived.
The shoulder and back pain, along with the gastrointestinal symptoms, could suggest a broader issue, potentially linked to muscle tension or digestive disturbances. It’s not uncommon for women to experience physical discomfort related to hormonal changes, which can lead to muscle tension and pain.
Your health check results indicating an excess of red blood cells and low mean corpuscular volume (MCV) could suggest a condition known as polycythemia, which can be caused by various factors, including dehydration, smoking, or underlying health issues. It is crucial to discuss these results with your healthcare provider, as they may require further investigation to determine the underlying cause.
To address your irregular menstrual cycles and related health issues, consider the following steps:
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: It is essential to see a healthcare professional who can evaluate your symptoms in detail. They may recommend blood tests to check hormone levels, thyroid function, and other relevant markers.
2. Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporating stress-reduction techniques such as yoga, meditation, or regular physical activity can help regulate your menstrual cycle. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet rich in whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats can support hormonal balance.
3. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keeping a detailed record of your menstrual cycle, symptoms, and any lifestyle changes can provide valuable information for your healthcare provider. This record can help identify patterns and potential triggers for your irregular cycles.
4. Consider Nutritional Support: Certain vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin D, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids, can support hormonal health. Discuss with your healthcare provider whether supplementation might be appropriate for you.
5. Address Gastrointestinal Symptoms: If you are experiencing ongoing gastrointestinal discomfort, consider consulting a gastroenterologist. They can help identify any underlying issues, such as food intolerances or gastrointestinal disorders, that may be contributing to your symptoms.
6. Regular Follow-ups: Given the complexity of your symptoms, regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are crucial. They can monitor your progress and make necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
In summary, addressing irregular menstrual cycles and related health issues requires a multifaceted approach that includes medical evaluation, lifestyle changes, and symptom monitoring. By working closely with your healthcare provider, you can develop a personalized plan to improve your overall health and well-being.
