How to choose artificial tears?

Hello Doctor: I previously experienced dry eyes due to wearing contact lenses for too long.
I have seen a doctor before who prescribed me Sintong artificial tears.
Since I am running low, I would like to purchase artificial tears on my own.
I no longer wear contact lenses for extended periods; I usually take them off after about 4 to 6 hours.
I would like to ask which type of artificial tears is suitable for use with contact lenses.
Below are some products for reference, or if you could recommend any products available at the pharmacy, I would appreciate it.

Dr. Zhang Yanrui reply Ophthalmology

Eye drops that can be used with contact lenses are usually specifically labeled for that purpose.
You can purchase them at larger pharmacies, as long as they meet safety standards, there are no brand restrictions.

When it comes to choosing the right artificial tears for contact lens wearers, it's essential to understand the specific needs of your eyes, especially if you've experienced dryness or discomfort from prolonged contact lens use. Artificial tears can help alleviate symptoms of dry eyes, but not all products are suitable for contact lens wearers.
Firstly, it's important to look for artificial tears that are specifically labeled as "contact lens compatible." These products are formulated to be safe for use with contact lenses and often contain ingredients that help to maintain moisture without causing irritation or cloudiness. Here are some common ingredients and their benefits:
1. Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC): This ingredient is known for its lubricating properties and is commonly found in artificial tears. It helps to retain moisture on the surface of the eye, making it a good choice for those who wear contact lenses.

2. Sodium Hyaluronate: This is a form of hyaluronic acid that is highly effective in retaining moisture. It provides a cushioning effect and is often included in artificial tears designed for contact lens wearers. Products like Sintong's "可麗隱形眼鏡舒潤液" contain this ingredient, making it a suitable option.

3. Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA): This ingredient is also used in many artificial tears and helps to lubricate the eye. It can be beneficial for those who experience dryness while wearing contact lenses.

4. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP): Similar to PVA, PVP is a lubricant that can help reduce friction between the contact lens and the eye, providing comfort during wear.

When selecting an artificial tear, consider the following tips:
- Preservative-Free Options: If you wear contact lenses regularly, look for preservative-free artificial tears. Preservatives can sometimes cause irritation, especially with frequent use. Many brands offer preservative-free formulations that are safe for daily use.

- Viscosity: Some artificial tears are thicker and provide longer-lasting relief, while others are more fluid and may be better for immediate comfort. If you find that your eyes feel dry after a few hours of wearing lenses, a thicker formulation might be beneficial.

- Consult Your Eye Care Professional: Since you mentioned that you previously received a prescription for Sintong artificial tears, it would be wise to consult your eye care provider again. They can recommend specific products based on your eye health and lifestyle.

- Trial and Error: Sometimes, finding the right product may require trying a few different brands or formulations. Pay attention to how your eyes feel after using a particular product and adjust accordingly.

In summary, when choosing artificial tears for contact lens wearers, look for products that are specifically designed for use with lenses, contain beneficial lubricating ingredients, and are preservative-free if you wear lenses frequently. Always consult with your eye care professional for personalized recommendations based on your specific needs.
