Nasal Changes: Myths and Facts About Nose Pulling - Orthopedics

Nose

A few years ago, I heard that pulling on the nose every day could make it more prominent, so I did it daily.
However, when I compared my current photos to those from three years ago, it seems to have become thinner and more upturned, almost atrophied.
What could be the reason for this?

Dr. Lin Junliang reply Orthopedics

I apologize, but this issue is outside the scope of orthopedics, and I cannot provide a professional response.
Dr.
Liao Wen-Hong from our hospital's plastic surgery department will address this.
The nose is supported by nasal cartilage, which maintains the shape of the nasal tip and wings.
Prolonged pressure on soft tissues, similar to other soft tissues, can lead to tissue atrophy.
Therefore, to enhance the nose's appearance, it is advisable to have a plastic surgeon evaluate whether autologous cartilage grafting or artificial nasal implants would be more appropriate.
If there has been any thinning or atrophy, please immediately stop any actions that may be pulling on the nose and use skin nourishing products to gradually restore its original luster.

Liao Wen-Hong, Department of Plastic Surgery, Miaoli Hospital.

The idea that pulling or stretching the nose can alter its shape is a common myth. The nose is primarily composed of cartilage and skin, and while external manipulation may temporarily change its appearance, it does not have a lasting effect on its structure. In fact, excessive pulling or tugging on the nose can lead to skin irritation, inflammation, and even potential damage to the underlying cartilage over time.

When you mention that your nose appears thinner and more upturned compared to three years ago, several factors could be at play. First, natural aging processes can affect the skin's elasticity and the underlying support structures of the nose. As we age, the skin loses collagen and elasticity, which can lead to changes in the shape and firmness of the nose. Additionally, weight fluctuations can also impact the appearance of the nose, as changes in facial fat distribution can alter how the nose looks in relation to other facial features.

Another important aspect to consider is the role of genetics. The shape and size of your nose are largely determined by your genetic makeup. If you have family members with similar nose shapes, it is likely that your nose's appearance is influenced by hereditary factors rather than external manipulation.

If you are concerned about the changes in your nose's appearance, it may be worthwhile to consult with a medical professional, such as a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon specializing in facial aesthetics. They can provide a thorough evaluation and discuss potential options if you are looking for cosmetic changes.

In terms of nasal health, it is essential to maintain proper care and avoid unnecessary manipulation. If you experience issues such as nasal congestion, runny nose, or other symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical advice. Conditions like allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, or structural abnormalities (such as a deviated septum) can lead to nasal discomfort and should be addressed by a healthcare professional.

In summary, while the myth of pulling the nose to change its shape persists, the reality is that such practices are unlikely to yield the desired results and may even cause harm. The appearance of your nose is influenced by a combination of genetic factors, aging, and overall facial structure. If you have concerns about your nasal appearance or health, consulting with a qualified medical professional is the best course of action.

I've heard that pulling on the nose vigorously every day can make it more prominent. Is this true? I've tried it for a while, but I often end up with a sore nose the next day, and it doesn't seem to have much effect. I'm not sure if it actually works.

Dr. Lu Daokuan reply Plastic Surgery
A prominent nose requires the cooperation of the nasal bones, nasal cartilage, and soft tissues, as well as skin elasticity. Simply pulling on the nose will only cause pain.
