Eyes
Hello, I have a concern regarding my right eye.
When I feel fatigued, I often experience a sensation of swelling in that eye.
Last night, while resting my head on my left hand and using only my right eye to look at the computer, I suddenly noticed that the image I was seeing with my right eye changed to a scene that was half in color and half in black and white.
However, I could still see clearly with my right eye, although the black and white part appeared somewhat blurry.
Once I straightened my body, that condition gradually disappeared.
Recently, I have also been experiencing severe nasal congestion.
I would like to ask if this is a serious issue and if it is related to my nasal congestion.
Thank you.

Hello: When tired, rubbing the eyes combined with nasal congestion can easily lead to eye swelling.
It is uncertain whether vision issues can be detected through glasses.
The theory suggests that both eyes are looking, but the two images do not fuse; it is also possible that one eye is misaligned, resulting in a black-and-white appearance in the deviated eye.
Wishing you peace and health.

Your symptoms of eye swelling, color distortion, and nasal congestion may indeed be interconnected. Let’s break down the potential causes and relationships between these symptoms.
Firstly, the swelling in your right eye, especially after prolonged use or strain, could be indicative of several conditions. One common issue is eye fatigue, which can occur after extended periods of screen time. This is often exacerbated by poor posture, such as resting your head on your hand while looking at a computer screen. This position can place additional strain on the eye muscles and lead to discomfort or swelling.
The color distortion you experienced, where one side of your vision appeared colorful while the other was black and white, could be related to a phenomenon known as "visual field defect." This can occur due to various reasons, including eye strain, migraines, or even temporary disruptions in blood flow to the eye. The fact that this distortion resolved when you adjusted your posture suggests that it might be related to the pressure or strain on your eye rather than a more serious underlying condition.
Now, regarding your nasal congestion, it is essential to recognize that the eyes and nasal passages are closely linked through the optic nerve and the sinuses. Inflammation or congestion in the nasal passages can lead to pressure changes in the sinuses, which can, in turn, affect the eyes. This is particularly true if you are experiencing sinusitis or allergic rhinitis, which can cause swelling and discomfort in both the nasal passages and the eyes. The nasal congestion could also lead to referred pain or discomfort in the eye area, contributing to the swelling and visual disturbances you are experiencing.
Moreover, if you have a history of allergies or sinus issues, it is possible that these conditions are exacerbating your eye symptoms. Allergic reactions can lead to inflammation of the conjunctiva (the membrane covering the eye), causing redness, swelling, and discomfort. This inflammation can also affect your vision temporarily, leading to symptoms like blurriness or distortion.
To address these symptoms effectively, consider the following recommendations:
1. Eye Care: Ensure you take regular breaks from screen time. The 20-20-20 rule is helpful: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This can help reduce eye strain.
2. Posture: Maintain good posture while working at your computer. Ensure your screen is at eye level to minimize strain on your neck and eyes.
3. Nasal Congestion Management: If your nasal congestion is severe, consider using saline nasal sprays or decongestants (after consulting with a healthcare provider) to alleviate the pressure. If allergies are suspected, antihistamines may help.
4. Consultation: Given the complexity of your symptoms, it would be wise to consult with both an ophthalmologist and an ENT specialist. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation to determine if there is an underlying condition that needs to be addressed.
5. Hydration and Humidity: Ensure you stay hydrated and consider using a humidifier in your workspace to maintain moisture in the air, which can help with both eye comfort and nasal congestion.
In summary, your symptoms of eye swelling and color distortion may be related to eye strain and nasal congestion. Addressing both the eye care and nasal issues holistically will likely lead to better outcomes. If symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical attention is crucial to rule out any serious conditions.
