Parotid lymphadenitis
Hello, Dr.
Yeh.
A couple of days ago, I visited your clinic regarding inflammation under my left ear, which you said was lymphadenitis and prescribed medication for 6 days.
However, by the evening, I noticed a small hard lump (about 2 cm) near my left ear that is also painful.
I have been taking the antibiotics you prescribed.
This morning, I woke up to find that the area under my right ear is also starting to hurt and is beginning to protrude.
It seems to be getting worse, with both sides affected.
I am very worried—could this be something serious? I am scheduled for a follow-up appointment on November 10, number 70.
Should I come in earlier for a more detailed examination? Additionally, could the lymphadenitis be related to my nasal congestion, which has lasted for over two weeks? Could this be caused by a cold?

More Info
Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding lymphadenitis. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing symptoms that warrant further attention. Let’s break down what lymphadenitis is, its symptoms, potential causes, and when it’s important to seek medical help.
Understanding Lymphadenitis
Lymphadenitis is an inflammation of the lymph nodes, which can occur due to various reasons, including infections. The lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that play a crucial role in the immune system by filtering harmful substances and producing lymphocytes, which are essential for fighting infections.
Symptoms of Lymphadenitis
Common symptoms of lymphadenitis include:
- Swelling and tenderness in the affected lymph nodes (in your case, under the ears)
- Pain in the area surrounding the lymph nodes
- Redness or warmth over the lymph nodes
- Fever and chills
- Fatigue
- Possible drainage of pus if an abscess forms
In your situation, the development of hard lumps near your ears, along with pain and the recent onset of symptoms on the right side, suggests that the condition may be worsening. It’s essential to monitor these symptoms closely.
Causes of Lymphadenitis
Lymphadenitis can be caused by:
- Bacterial infections: Such as strep throat or skin infections.
- Viral infections: Including those caused by the common cold or flu.
- Fungal infections: Less common but can occur.
- Other conditions: Such as autoimmune diseases or malignancies.
Given that you have been experiencing nasal congestion for over two weeks, it is possible that a viral infection, such as a cold or sinus infection, could be contributing to your lymphadenitis. The nasal congestion can lead to inflammation and infection that spreads to the lymph nodes in the neck.
When to Seek Help
You should definitely consider seeking medical attention sooner than your scheduled appointment if:
- The swelling and pain in your lymph nodes worsen or spread.
- You develop a high fever or experience chills.
- You notice any signs of an abscess (such as pus drainage).
- You experience difficulty swallowing or breathing.
- You feel increasingly fatigued or unwell.
It’s always better to err on the side of caution, especially when it comes to potential infections. A healthcare provider may want to perform a physical examination, possibly order blood tests, or imaging studies to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and provide appropriate treatment.
Conclusion
In summary, lymphadenitis can be a sign of an underlying infection, and your symptoms suggest that it may be necessary to reassess your condition. Given the recent developments with your lymph nodes and the pain you are experiencing, I recommend that you contact your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and possibly arrange for an earlier evaluation. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure that you receive the appropriate treatment.
Take care, and I hope you feel better soon!
