Regarding the issue of orbital depression?
Hello, I would like to ask if Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can treat sunken eye sockets? My eye sockets look relatively normal when I wake up in the morning, but after a few hours, one of them becomes sunken, making my eyes look very aged.
I have consulted Western medicine, and they suggested fat grafting, but I am afraid of surgery.
Does TCM have alternative methods for treatment? Please let me know, thank you.

Dr. Ding Hanxiang reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Dear Lynn,
Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that the spleen governs the muscles, and the kidneys are related to the eyes.
Therefore, sunken eyes may be addressed by first regulating the body through these two aspects, in conjunction with acupuncture.
However, it requires patience for gradual improvement.
If the sunken appearance is significant, the therapeutic effect may be limited.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely,
Dr.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers various approaches to treat conditions related to the eyes, including sunken eyes, which can be a cosmetic concern as well as a sign of underlying health issues. Sunken eyes can result from several factors, including dehydration, fatigue, aging, or even nutritional deficiencies. TCM focuses on restoring balance within the body, which can potentially improve the appearance of sunken eyes.
In TCM, the eyes are believed to be closely connected to the liver and kidney health. Therefore, treatments often aim to nourish these organs. Herbal remedies, acupuncture, and dietary adjustments are common methods used in TCM to address this issue.
1. Herbal Remedies: Certain herbs are known for their ability to nourish the blood and improve circulation, which can help alleviate the appearance of sunken eyes. For instance, herbs like goji berries (枸杞), which are rich in antioxidants, and Chinese yam (山藥), known for its nourishing properties, may be beneficial. Formulations like "Sheng Mai San" or "Ba Zhen Tang" could also be considered, as they are designed to tonify the body and improve vitality.
2. Acupuncture: This technique can help stimulate blood flow and energy (Qi) to the areas around the eyes. Specific acupuncture points may be targeted to enhance circulation and reduce the appearance of hollowness. Regular sessions may lead to improvements in the overall appearance of the skin around the eyes.
3. Dietary Adjustments: TCM emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet. Consuming foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, can support skin health. Hydration is also crucial; ensuring adequate water intake can help maintain skin elasticity and fullness.
4. Lifestyle Modifications: Adequate sleep, stress management, and reducing screen time can also play a significant role in improving the appearance of sunken eyes. TCM practitioners often recommend practices such as Tai Chi or Qi Gong to promote relaxation and overall well-being.
Regarding your concern about surgical options, it is understandable to be apprehensive about invasive procedures like fat grafting. TCM provides a non-invasive alternative that can be explored. However, it is essential to manage expectations; while TCM can improve the condition of your skin and overall health, results may vary, and it may take time to see significant changes.
When seeking treatment, it is advisable to consult a licensed TCM practitioner who has experience with cosmetic concerns. They can provide a tailored treatment plan based on your specific condition and health history.
In conclusion, while TCM may not provide an instant fix, it offers a holistic approach that can improve the health and appearance of your eyes over time. By addressing the underlying imbalances in your body, TCM can potentially help reduce the appearance of sunken eyes and enhance your overall vitality.
