Breathing through the nose is very difficult?

Hello Doctor: I find it very difficult to breathe through my nose, and there is a significant sound when I do, so I have been breathing through my mouth.
However, I feel that this is not ideal, and my mouth often becomes dry, which is quite bothersome.
I also frequently experience dizziness and difficulty concentrating.
For the past two months, my nasal mucus has become thick; initially, it was yellow-green, but for the past month, it has been clear and thick, occasionally accompanied by blood when I blow my nose.
Could you please explain why this is happening? How can I achieve normal nasal breathing like others? Thank you.

Dear Xiaoya,
Hello.
Based on your description and questions, it seems that you may have rhinitis and sinusitis.
I recommend that you visit an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) clinic near your home, as they will be able to provide you with a definitive diagnosis.

Sincerely,

More Info

Struggling to breathe through your nose can be a frustrating and concerning experience. Based on your description, it seems that you are dealing with several symptoms that could be related to underlying nasal or respiratory issues. Let's break down some common causes and potential solutions for your situation.

Common Causes of Nasal Breathing Difficulties
1. Nasal Congestion: This is often caused by inflammation of the nasal passages due to allergies, infections, or irritants. Conditions such as allergic rhinitis or sinusitis can lead to swelling and blockage of the nasal passages, making it difficult to breathe through your nose.

2. Nasal Polyps: These are non-cancerous growths that can develop in the nasal passages or sinuses due to chronic inflammation. They can obstruct airflow and contribute to breathing difficulties.

3. Deviated Septum: A deviated septum occurs when the cartilage and bone that divide the nasal cavity are off-center or crooked, which can restrict airflow and lead to breathing problems.

4. Infections: Sinus infections (sinusitis) can cause thick, discolored nasal discharge and lead to difficulty breathing through the nose. The presence of blood in your nasal discharge could indicate irritation or inflammation in the nasal passages.

5. Environmental Factors: Exposure to pollutants, smoke, or strong odors can irritate the nasal passages and lead to congestion.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline nasal spray or performing nasal irrigation with a neti pot can help clear mucus and allergens from your nasal passages. This can provide immediate relief and improve your ability to breathe through your nose.

2. Over-the-Counter Medications: Antihistamines can help if your symptoms are related to allergies. Decongestants can also provide temporary relief from nasal congestion. However, be cautious with prolonged use of decongestant nasal sprays, as they can lead to rebound congestion.

3. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam from a hot shower or a bowl of hot water can help moisten and clear your nasal passages, making it easier to breathe.

4. Consultation with a Specialist: If your symptoms persist, it is advisable to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including nasal endoscopy, to identify any structural issues like a deviated septum or polyps that may require surgical intervention.

5. Allergy Testing: If allergies are suspected, getting tested can help identify specific triggers. Avoiding these allergens and possibly undergoing immunotherapy can significantly improve your symptoms.

6. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help thin mucus, making it easier to expel. This is particularly important if you are experiencing thick nasal discharge.

7. Humidifiers: Using a humidifier in your home can add moisture to the air, which can help soothe irritated nasal passages and reduce congestion.

Conclusion
Your symptoms of difficulty breathing through your nose, thick nasal discharge, and occasional bleeding could be indicative of several underlying issues, including allergies, infections, or structural abnormalities. It's essential to address these symptoms promptly to prevent further complications and improve your quality of life. If over-the-counter treatments and home remedies do not provide relief, seeking medical advice from an ENT specialist is crucial for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Remember, maintaining good nasal health is vital for overall well-being, as it can significantly affect your respiratory function and daily activities.
