Facial rash, present only on the right side of the face?

Hello Doctor: In the past month, I have developed 5-7 red spots on the right side of my face, specifically near the right side of my mouth.
These spots are about the size of a typical mole, but they are neither itchy nor painful.
They gradually disappear after 3-7 days, but then I notice 5-7 more red spots appearing next to my right eye.
I am unsure of the cause, and it seems to only affect the right side.
Today is December 21, Sunday, and I have also developed a spot on my right hand.
Additionally, every morning when I wake up, I experience pain in my back (specifically in the area directly behind my stomach, near the spine).
This has been occurring almost every morning for the past month, but the pain subsides shortly after I get up.
I would appreciate your insights on this matter.
Thank you, Rita.

Hello:
1.
There are many possible causes for facial rashes, including acne, folliculitis, eczema, insect bites, and rosacea.
Based on your description, the bump on your right hand is most likely an insect bite or eczema.
A definitive diagnosis should be confirmed by a dermatologist.

2.
If you experience back pain every morning upon waking, please consult an orthopedic specialist or a rehabilitation physician.
Thank you!

Hello Rita,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the unilateral facial rashes and the accompanying symptoms you have been experiencing. Based on your description, it seems that you are dealing with a few different issues that may or may not be related.

Firstly, the appearance of red spots or rashes on one side of your face, particularly around the mouth and eye, could be indicative of several conditions. One possibility is a type of dermatitis, which can manifest as red, non-itchy bumps. This could be due to contact dermatitis, where the skin reacts to an irritant or allergen. Another possibility is a viral infection, such as herpes simplex, which can cause localized rashes and is often unilateral. However, given that the spots resolve within a few days and recur, it may also suggest a benign condition like a viral exanthem or even a form of rosacea that is localized.

The fact that these rashes are only occurring on the right side of your face is noteworthy. Unilateral symptoms can sometimes indicate a localized issue, such as a nerve-related condition. For instance, conditions like Bell's palsy can lead to facial asymmetry and rashes due to the involvement of the facial nerve. However, Bell's palsy typically presents with more pronounced facial weakness and other neurological symptoms.

Regarding the pain you experience in your back upon waking, this could be related to several factors. It may be due to muscle strain, poor sleeping posture, or even a condition like a herniated disc that could be causing referred pain. The fact that the pain subsides shortly after getting up is a good sign, but it is essential to monitor this symptom closely. If it persists or worsens, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.

In summary, the unilateral facial rashes and the back pain you are experiencing could be linked to various underlying causes. Here are some steps you can take:
1. Consult a Dermatologist: Given the nature of the rashes, a dermatologist can provide a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. They may perform a skin examination and possibly a biopsy if necessary.

2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when the rashes appear, their duration, and any associated factors (like stress, diet, or exposure to potential allergens). This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

3. Evaluate Back Pain: If the back pain continues, consider seeing a physical therapist or a chiropractor who can assess your posture and provide exercises to strengthen your back muscles.

4. Stress Management: Stress can exacerbate skin conditions and muscle tension. Techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises may help alleviate some of these symptoms.

5. Follow-Up: If you notice any new symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, or changes in your vision, seek medical attention promptly.

In conclusion, while the symptoms you describe can be concerning, they are not uncommon and can often be managed effectively with the right approach. Please do not hesitate to seek medical advice to ensure a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these issues early can lead to better outcomes.
