Postoperative Issues Following Radiofrequency Surgery
Hello! I have been experiencing chronic nasal congestion and went to see a doctor.
The doctor diagnosed me with nasal polyps and a deviated septum.
I first underwent radiofrequency ablation surgery to remove the nasal polyps, and the scabs formed eventually fell off after some time.
However, my nasal congestion worsened, and no medication seemed to help.
I also felt a sore throat, had increased headaches while sleeping, and woke up feeling more fatigued.
My nose was completely blocked, and only after clearing my nasal discharge did I feel somewhat relieved, but it didn't last long before the congestion returned.
Then one time, I suddenly couldn't breathe at all, felt a compression in my chest, my limbs started to tingle, my consciousness became hazy, my hands began to cramp, and I started gasping for air.
I felt like living was very difficult.
Later, I went to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaohsiung, and Dr.
Lin said I was fine and didn't need surgery.
He prescribed me medication, but after a week of taking it, I still didn't see any improvement.
I don't know what to do.

Post-surgery complications after radiofrequency surgery for nasal issues can be quite complex and may vary from patient to patient. In your case, it seems that you have undergone radiofrequency ablation to remove nasal polyps, but you are now experiencing worsening nasal congestion, throat pain, headaches, and other distressing symptoms.
Firstly, it is important to understand that radiofrequency surgery is often used to treat conditions like nasal polyps and deviated septum. While it can be effective in alleviating symptoms, there are potential complications and side effects that can arise post-surgery. These may include:
1. Nasal Congestion: It is not uncommon for patients to experience increased nasal congestion after surgery. This can be due to swelling in the nasal passages, the formation of scar tissue, or even the presence of residual polyps. The healing process can lead to temporary worsening of symptoms before improvement is noted.
2. Throat Pain and Post-Nasal Drip: Post-surgery, some patients may experience throat pain due to post-nasal drip, where mucus accumulates in the throat. This can lead to irritation and discomfort, especially at night when lying down.
3. Headaches and Fatigue: The pressure and congestion in the nasal passages can lead to sinus headaches. Additionally, poor sleep quality due to nasal obstruction can contribute to feelings of fatigue upon waking.
4. Respiratory Distress: The sudden inability to breathe, along with feelings of heart compression and limb numbness, is concerning. These symptoms could indicate a severe allergic reaction, anxiety, or even a panic attack, particularly if they occurred suddenly. It is crucial to seek immediate medical attention if such symptoms arise again.
5. Medication Ineffectiveness: If the medications prescribed by your doctor are not providing relief, it may be necessary to revisit your healthcare provider. They may need to reassess your condition, consider alternative treatments, or investigate other underlying issues that may be contributing to your symptoms.
6. Possible Recurrence of Nasal Polyps: Unfortunately, nasal polyps can recur even after surgical intervention. If you have a history of chronic sinusitis or allergies, these conditions can contribute to the development of new polyps.
Given your ongoing symptoms and the lack of improvement with medication, it may be beneficial to seek a second opinion from another ENT specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies like a CT scan, to assess the state of your nasal passages and sinuses.
In addition to medical treatment, consider discussing lifestyle changes that may help alleviate your symptoms. This could include using a humidifier, practicing nasal saline irrigation, and avoiding known allergens or irritants.
In summary, while radiofrequency surgery can be beneficial for nasal issues, complications can arise. Persistent symptoms warrant further evaluation and possibly a different treatment approach. Your health and comfort are paramount, so do not hesitate to advocate for your needs with your healthcare providers.
