Sudden diarrhea?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask you about my sudden onset of diarrhea multiple times, accompanied by burping with a strong odor.
My stools are very watery, almost like liquid, and I can pass them without any effort.
They also have a strong fishy smell, and there are small red objects in the stool.
After a while, I experienced vomiting, bringing up undigested food from lunch along with stomach acid.
I have never experienced these symptoms before.
Could you please tell me what might be the cause and the condition? I recently ate a lot of all-you-can-eat dishes; could that be related? Thank you.

Xiao Ren Jia, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/02/17

Dr. Chen Qifeng reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Hello, based on the symptoms, it is evident that this is a case of gastroenteritis and indigestion.
Consuming contaminated or stale food, as well as overeating or eating excessively spicy foods, can lead to these conditions.
Best regards, Dr.

Sudden diarrhea can be alarming, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as foul-smelling gas, watery stools, and the presence of unusual substances in the stool. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a combination of gastrointestinal distress that could be attributed to several factors.

Firstly, the presence of watery diarrhea suggests that your intestines are not absorbing water properly, which can occur due to various reasons, including infections, food intolerances, or even stress. The foul odor and the presence of small red objects in your stool could indicate the presence of undigested food, blood, or even parasites, depending on the context. The fact that you mentioned vomiting undigested food along with gastric acid further points to a possible gastrointestinal disturbance, which could be due to a condition known as gastritis or a more severe infection.

One potential cause of your symptoms could be food poisoning, especially if you recently consumed a large quantity of food, such as at an all-you-can-eat restaurant. Food poisoning can result from bacteria (like Salmonella or E. coli), viruses (like norovirus), or parasites that contaminate food or water. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and sometimes fever. The severity and duration of symptoms can vary depending on the pathogen involved and the individual's health status.

Another possibility is a gastrointestinal infection, which can be viral or bacterial in nature. Viral gastroenteritis, often referred to as the "stomach flu," can cause sudden onset diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Bacterial infections can also lead to similar symptoms, particularly if the bacteria produce toxins that irritate the intestinal lining.

Additionally, your symptoms could be related to a condition known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), especially if you have a history of gastrointestinal issues. IBS can cause episodes of diarrhea, constipation, or alternating between both, often triggered by stress, dietary changes, or infections.

Given the severity of your symptoms, particularly the presence of blood or unusual objects in your stool and the vomiting, it is crucial to seek medical attention as soon as possible. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, laboratory tests, and possibly imaging studies to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. They may also recommend stool tests to check for infections, parasites, or other abnormalities.

In the meantime, it is essential to stay hydrated, as diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Drinking clear fluids, such as water, broth, or oral rehydration solutions, can help replenish lost fluids and electrolytes. Avoiding solid foods until your symptoms improve may also be advisable, gradually reintroducing bland foods as tolerated.

In summary, sudden diarrhea accompanied by vomiting and unusual stool characteristics can indicate a range of gastrointestinal issues, from infections to food intolerances. It is essential to consult a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure a quicker recovery.
