Breathing Difficulties and Heart Sensations: A Guide - Family Medicine

Heartbeat. Breathing?

(I've had this since I was very young) Sometimes I need to take a long, deep breath, hold it for a moment, and then exhale to feel more comfortable; otherwise, I constantly feel like there's something blocking my breathing from my chest to my throat.
Sometimes, due to the frequency of deep breaths, I can also feel my body vibrating with my heartbeat, especially when I'm sitting and reading.
Is this normal? Occasionally, when I do stretching exercises, such as bending sideways or reaching for something far away, I feel a dull pain in my chest, but it goes away if I turn back and rest for a moment.
This shouldn't be something serious, right?

Hello, Ms.
Lai Wei-Hsin.
Thank you for your question.
Here is the response to your inquiry: You feel as if there is something obstructing your breathing from your chest to your throat, and you are experiencing frequent deep breaths.
First, it is important to check for any tumors or organic diseases in the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) region.
If these possibilities are ruled out, a deeper explanation could involve conditions related to the "lung in throat." Therefore, I recommend: 1.
Further evaluation at a major hospital's ENT outpatient department for a detailed examination.
2.
If time permits, consider an additional consultation with a neurologist.
Thank you.

Understanding breathing difficulties and sensations related to the heart can be quite complex, especially when these symptoms have been present for a long time. It’s essential to approach this topic with a comprehensive understanding of both respiratory and cardiovascular health.

Firstly, the sensation of needing to take deep breaths frequently, or feeling as though something is obstructing your breathing, can be indicative of several underlying issues. These may range from anxiety and panic disorders to physical conditions affecting the lungs or heart. Anxiety can often manifest as a feeling of breathlessness, where individuals may feel they are not getting enough air, leading to hyperventilation. This can create a cycle of anxiety and breathing difficulties, as the more one focuses on their breathing, the more anxious they may become.

In your case, the sensation of your body being "shaken" by your heartbeat while sitting or reading could be related to heightened awareness of your heart rate, which can be influenced by anxiety or stress. This phenomenon is often referred to as palpitations, where one becomes acutely aware of their heartbeat, which may feel irregular or unusually strong. While palpitations can be benign, they can also signal underlying heart conditions, especially if accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath.

The chest discomfort you experience during stretching or certain movements could be related to musculoskeletal issues, particularly if the pain is sharp and transient. This type of pain is often not related to heart disease but rather to muscle strain or tension in the chest wall. However, it’s crucial to differentiate this from cardiac-related pain, which is typically more persistent and may be associated with other symptoms like sweating, nausea, or radiating pain.

Given your history of breathing difficulties and the sensations you describe, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. This may include a physical examination, an electrocardiogram (ECG), and possibly a stress test or echocardiogram to assess your heart's function. Additionally, pulmonary function tests may be warranted to evaluate your lung capacity and function, especially if you have a history of respiratory issues.

In terms of management, if anxiety is a significant factor in your symptoms, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or yoga may be beneficial. These approaches can help reduce anxiety and improve your overall sense of well-being. Regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy diet, and ensuring adequate sleep are also critical components of managing both cardiovascular and respiratory health.

Lastly, it’s important to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience any new or worsening symptoms, such as persistent chest pain, significant changes in your breathing pattern, or episodes of fainting, seek medical attention promptly. Understanding your body’s signals and seeking help when needed is vital for maintaining your health and peace of mind.
