Sudden numbness at the fingertips with redness and swelling?
Doctor, I woke up one day with sudden numbness in my left index finger, along with redness and swelling.
It has persisted for 3 to 4 days, remaining numb but with some sensation.
The redness and swelling have not subsided.
What could this condition be? Thank you.

Dr. Zeng Guosen reply Internal Medicine
According to online descriptions, redness and swelling are generally caused by inflammation or infection.
Without a personal examination, it is difficult to determine the specific condition.
It is recommended to seek a consultation in person.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Sudden finger numbness and swelling can be concerning symptoms, and there are several potential causes that could explain your condition. Based on your description of waking up with numbness and swelling in your left index finger that persisted for several days, it is important to consider a few possible diagnoses.
1. Nerve Compression: One of the most common causes of sudden numbness in the fingers is nerve compression. This can occur due to sleeping in an awkward position, which may compress the nerves in the arm or wrist. Conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, where the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, can lead to numbness and swelling in the fingers. If the compression is severe or prolonged, it can result in persistent symptoms.
2. Injury or Trauma: If you have recently experienced any trauma to your hand or wrist, even if it seemed minor at the time, it could lead to swelling and numbness. This could include sprains, strains, or even fractures that may not be immediately apparent.
3. Infection: An infection in the finger, such as a felon (an infection of the fingertip) or paronychia (an infection around the nail), can cause swelling, redness, and numbness. If there is any accompanying pain, warmth, or pus, it would be important to seek medical attention promptly.
4. Inflammatory Conditions: Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory arthritis can cause swelling and numbness in the fingers. These conditions often present with additional symptoms, such as joint pain and stiffness, particularly in the morning.
5. Circulatory Issues: Poor circulation can also lead to numbness and swelling. Conditions such as Raynaud's phenomenon, where blood vessels constrict excessively in response to cold or stress, can cause fingers to swell and feel numb.
6. Allergic Reaction: An allergic reaction to something that came into contact with your finger, such as a new soap, lotion, or even a food item, could lead to localized swelling and numbness.
Given that your symptoms have persisted for several days, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider will be able to perform a physical examination and may recommend diagnostic tests, such as blood tests, imaging studies, or nerve conduction studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In the meantime, you can try some general measures to alleviate your symptoms. Elevating your hand may help reduce swelling, and applying a cold compress can provide some relief. Avoiding any activities that exacerbate the numbness or swelling is also recommended.
In conclusion, while there are several potential causes for your sudden finger numbness and swelling, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and improve your overall hand function.
