Numbness in the feet?
Hello: My left foot has been itchy and feels numb at times.
It also feels numb when I wash it with water.
However, if I ignore it, I don't feel uncomfortable, just a bit strange.
This has been going on for almost a month.
Additionally, I have knee pain and my hands also experience numbness (especially when circulation is poor or when I sleep, my pinky and ring fingers can become numb, extending to my arm).
I'm not sure if there is a connection.
If I continue to ignore it, will it resolve on its own? I'm also unsure if I should see a doctor, and if so, which specialist should I consult?

Hello: Based on the description, it is not possible to determine whether there is nerve compression causing symptoms such as numbness, pain, or weakness.
However, conditions such as peripheral neuropathy or electrolyte imbalances (such as low calcium levels) may be present.
It is recommended to first consult a family medicine physician for evaluation.

Numbness and itching in a child's feet can be concerning symptoms, especially when they persist for an extended period, as you have described. It is essential to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical help.
Firstly, numbness (or paresthesia) and itching can arise from various factors, including nerve compression, poor circulation, skin conditions, or even systemic issues. In children, these symptoms may be linked to conditions such as peripheral neuropathy, which can result from vitamin deficiencies (like B12), diabetes, or other metabolic disorders. Additionally, localized skin conditions such as eczema or allergic reactions can cause itching and may also lead to sensations of numbness if there is inflammation affecting nearby nerves.
Given that you have also mentioned experiencing knee pain and hand numbness, it is crucial to consider whether these symptoms are interconnected. For instance, conditions that affect circulation, such as vascular issues or even certain autoimmune diseases, can manifest as numbness and pain in various body parts. Furthermore, if you are experiencing numbness in your fingers, especially during sleep, it could indicate a condition like carpal tunnel syndrome or thoracic outlet syndrome, where nerves are compressed in the arm or wrist.
In your case, since the symptoms have persisted for almost a month, it is advisable to seek medical attention. While it may be tempting to wait and see if the symptoms resolve on their own, persistent numbness and itching can indicate an underlying issue that may require treatment. Ignoring these symptoms could lead to further complications, especially if they are related to nerve damage or circulatory problems.
When seeking medical help, it would be best to start with a primary care physician or a pediatrician, who can evaluate your child's symptoms in the context of their overall health. They may perform a physical examination and take a detailed medical history to identify any potential causes. Depending on their findings, they might refer you to a specialist, such as a neurologist (for nerve-related issues) or a dermatologist (for skin-related concerns).
In summary, while numbness and itching in the feet may not always indicate a severe problem, the persistence of these symptoms, especially in conjunction with other symptoms like knee pain and hand numbness, warrants a medical evaluation. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes and help identify any underlying conditions that may need to be addressed. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to health concerns, particularly in children.
